Runtime error 48 - file not found PSAPI.DLL

I get this error on a 98 machine when starting. No icons load and it is the same in safe mode. I can't access the machine until tomorrow but any advice on where to look for a cure much appreciated..

I know psapi.dll is a process status helper file but not whether simply replacing it will cure the problem or whether something else is causing the problem..

Hi dercoss,
    Use this...

I'm quite baffled, since that's not a Windows 98 file; could be related to other applications or interfaces you have.
This from the Microsoft Database for DLLs which I searched extensively, and none found relative to Windows 98 system types.  If/when you do install this, it is not self-registering, so you'll need to register it if really needed.  Curious what you were running when this dll was called.  Checked the bootlog.txt file for details?  Checked what all is loading at boot and calling for this file?

You did not mention on 'how to register' a file. I would also like to know although I have been getting along without it for years.

Tthe psapi.dll is a file in Windows/system.

You can reinstall it by:
Reboot to Dos Rapidly click {F8} button
Insert win98 cd rom
Go to c:\ prompt
Type E: <enter> for example for where the cd rom is located
Type cd win98
Type  extract /A /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM BASE4.CAB psapi.dll

The command will look at all cab files and find the psapi.dll and place it in windows\system

Sorted. It needed a restore as recommended. A virus had caused it and an updated virus checker removed it straightaway..

It was the "funner" virus apparently...
