Reinstalling ME and getting "SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module verx.dll"
I was trying to reinstall windows ME in a computer that could not read the registery apparently because #1 would never get to the desk top & when booting from disk could not complete a "scanreg" on C:\ #2 it even said words to the effect "error reading registery" it would also not boot in the safe mode; just a blank screen with the 4 "SafeMode" displays in each corner. Nothing else! Blank. No hour glass just the mouse pointer. So I tried to reinstall ME but got that message :
"SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module verx.dll"
"CLOSE" or "IGNORE"
after 64% of the copying files part was done and the IGNORE would do nothing. SO close I did. Pufe!!! Start over. I tried once changing the name of the "SYSTEM.DAT & USER.DAT" with the same results.
I held off reformating it in hopes someone will "KNOW" What the scoop is on that. I am not at the machine now & it's about 20 miles away & I would like to get a solid idea that the comment is a fix before I go out there.
Else it's FORMAT time. We all should know what that's like.
Microsoft would not find any help when I put the question to their data base. May be I did not word it right.
At any rate help will be appreciated ! !

i think you're just better off backing up your data, formatting, and installing a fresh copy

Nice thought but how do I install WMP (whichever) If I can't get into Windows???
Something is interferring with your completion of installing Windows ME. It is usually Windows Media Player 9 or Internet Explorer 6. Can delete Media Player folder from DOS?
Otherwise you will have to reformat and reinstall Windows.

not a problem I will post a points for war1 question and all will be fine
I know this comment is probably a bit after the fact - but I want to thank all for the input on the Windows Media Player clues... I found to just search the drive for all wmp*.* files and delete billy's lil player files - fixed it for me. Deleting 'some' didn't help me. After all - it is an in- place upgrade, maintain the apps and the good 'ol media player will re-install... and won't you feel good when you do the Windork Updates and reinstall ver 9 WMP again? God hope you don't see another verx error, right?
Gotta find a real competitor for billy...

My guess is that you have IE6 and or WMP9 beta installed.
To reinstall Win ME it will be necessary to downgrade IE6 to 5.5 and to remove WMP9.
Unfortunately WMP9 is not readily uninstallable and once you have unsuccessfully tried WinME reinstallation the Sytem Restore method is no longer available.
Download WMP7.1 from Microsoft and store it in a new folder.
I removed WMP9 by deleting the whole Windows Media Player folder and renaming C:\windows\system\wmploc.d
You may need to use safe mode for renaming and deleting (I didn't).
Install WMP7.1 and then reinstall Win ME.
Best wishes, war1
