Defrag never completes, always 4% left
I have run defrag several time but there is 4% of files still fragmented. I know this because I can visualy see the squares with red dots at the bottom and I went to www.pcpitstop.com and they told me so.
How do i get a 100% defrag? I also tryed diskeeper lite which BTW does not like to be uninstalled.

hi:
U can try using the free diagnostic utility from the vendor of your disk to check for problems with the disk

You might try to run defrag from safe mode, that way less programs will be in use and you'll get better results.

my restore points i want to keep and I have begone to like the hibrinate feature so I will live with the 4% fragmented. But I do thank you very much for explaining this to me so now I know where it comes from and how to get rid of it if I need to.
for diskeeper I did uninstall, the install.log was not the problem, but that aside.
Thanks so much.
BTW I did try safemode as recomended by LucF, as well I also downloaded the utility from Western digital, the company who makes my drive, but it reported no hard drive present, posibly because my drive is so old. Its a 2GB drive, I don't think they sell those anymore, but next month im buying a biger drive.

Thank you for the points rewarded !
BTW: and I LIKE HIBERNATE FILE since it proved to provide much faster boot time. But, remember, for security reasons IT IS GOOD IDEA to delete periodically hibernate file. Skillfull crackers CAN read the contents of hibernate file - belive it or not.
I've suggested deleting that file in order to provide better seek time hard-disk heads are to spend when searching for files through sectors and tracks .
Idea is : compact system and /or other files (read : files will be orginized within contiguous disk space ) then reenable hibernate mode so windows should create that file in first available free space right next/after to the system and other files . And the hibernate files will be in one single chunk, too.
Do the trick and Diskeeper can prove it graphically !
You will see that yellow page file sitting at the end of the used disk space.
I personally used to do more tricks to move that page file almost to the and of the hard-disk.
a- I used to defrag hard-disk
b- then I used to copy like 2-3 Gb e.g. mp3 files
c- reenable hybernate mode and recreate hibfile which will be pushed to the end of the disk (innermost disk tracks)
d-then delete 2-3 Gb mp3 tampon zone files so hibfile ( being unmovable) will remain untouched and far away from system and other files .
You'll be surprised how faster will be your disk and how much it will increase overall system performances .
Wish you get the larger hard-disk soon !

Red dots means the files cannot be moved. Some system files cannot be moved. so you should always have some not completely defragmented. So there is nothing wrong.
Best wishes, war1
