The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SMGR.DLL ERROR

Tags: error
Hi,

My friend received the following error on pc 'stmgr has caused an error in smgr.dll.  stmgr will now close.  If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your pc.'  Then this appeared.  'Error starting program, the c:\windows \system\scrolling marquee.scr files appears to be corrupt reinstall the file then try again, click ok'
Click ok, shut down pc the ususal way, start shut down, then booted back up.  All that appears is scan disk doing a thorough scan, but nothing appears to be happening.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Kelly1,
Do a system restore to a date before the problem occurred.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies.
I can't get into the pc.  When it loads up and starts the scan disk, nothing else happens.
Any suggestions?

Boot to DOS with a boot up disk. If you don't have one, get one from www.bootdisk.com Then run System Restore from DOS.

Start the System Restore Tool From a Command Prompt

Thanks for comments war1.
I downloaded the boot disk and carried out instructions exactly, did it twice to make sure, but when pc is restarted the program manager does not start.
The scan disk appears and crashes the pc again.
Any ideas?

Kelly1,
The boot disk file is not the boot disk itself.  You have to click on the file to create the boot disk.

Can you boot up to DOS now?

10.02.2003 at 02:41PM PDT, ID: 9480676
Yeah i created the boot file onto the floppy disk.
Booted up the pc in dos made all the changes i was supposed to from the microsoft web page, steps 1 to 7.
When i restarted the pc program manager does not start, the scan disk appears again.

Reinstall Windows over itself. You will not lose data, even though you should always back up your data.

Boot up with the Windows CD. If the CD is not bootable, boot up with a startup disk. If you don't have one, download one from www.bootdisk.com . Type setup or E:\setup , where E is your CD-ROM drive.

If you don't have the Windows CD, the system files may be in the CABS folder. From a:> type "c:\windows\options\cabs\setup" without the quotes and hit ENTER.

Accepted Solution
