ME Startup problem...blue screen

Hi!
I have a Compaq/Win ME. After logo screen at bootup, it runs through scandisk then goes to desktop. If I try to access anything, I get this error:
VMM(12) 00001A77 Error: OE: 0028 : C02776A77
Press any key to contine, screen goes blank.

Safe mode doesn't work either.
How do I fix this, and in the meantime, if I can bypass Windows altogether at bootup so I can manually access some files, that would be great.  Please explain how to do this.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!

same Q from same asker?

HI DLP,
Why have U posted the same question twice???
neways

1. Reboot the computer

2. As soon it restarts, keep hitting F8 key on ur keyboard

3. If its showing u scandisk, hit ESC (ESCAPE) and chose to Exit Scandisk

4. As soon as u Hit Exit, keep hitting F8

U will see windows startup menu

5. Select step-by-step confirmation

windows will start asking u what to load??

say YES to all
say NO to all .VxDs

This is becoz there is a .VxD which is initialising during boot and causing u this problem.

once u are able to boot.

Click start->Run->Msconfig

6. Click selective startup and uncheck Load static VxDS
    Apply and OK. Reboot

check to see if problem persists

U need to narrow down which VxD IS CAUSING IT

All the Best

Hi Alex,
I followed your steps and after I rebooted and got the window that tells me I am using selective blah blah blah, I pressed ok, and got a blue screen with this error:
VMM(12) 00001A77 Error: OE: 0028 C0275A77
I pressed "any key" to continue and got a blank screen, but there is something visible at the very top edge. Hope this sheds some light on the matter.
Waiting for further instructions and grateful for your help.
Donna
DLP1, did you try the system restore that I posted?

DLP1,
Here is what I ve found in one of the database.

VMM(12) 00001A77 Error: OE: 0028 C0275A77

Customers running Windows Millennium Edition with Norton Antivirus have reported
this problem
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/n1053742772
http://miataru.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/24591.html
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sunset3.nsf/9b0dd908ceb6964688256a2200124026/78

What I have found with the customers I have worked with was that they actually had
low system resources if in Normal Startup and they had tried to install a program,
or update.
This situation appears to break something in Norton Antivirus.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Resolution:

This is not likely but check for LANDesk Virus Protect (LDVP) versions 3-5,
uninstall if present - Per Norton's KnowledgeBase, if this is not the case then
consider the following options.

If you can get to the desktop: Permanently remove unnecessary programs loading at
startup if that has any possibility of interfering, then
First Option: Re-install Norton Antivirus (preferably the current version) -
recommend uninstall first
Second Option:  Run System Restore (preferred over scanreg /restore)

If you cannot access the desktop try scanreg /restore - only to be able to get
there and then use First or Second Option

Third Option: (Clean install )

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Now u know what can be the culprit.
Uninstall Norton AV.

1. Boot to a Win98/ME boot floppy disk. Get one made here
    www.bootdisk.com

2. Go to c:\windows
    type
           Edit system.ini       Hit ENTER
change the SHELL=EXPLORER.EXE to SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE

3. Press ALT F X
Hit Enter to save the changes
    REBOOT

4. Click FILE on Program manager menu and then RUN
     type APPWIZ.CPL

In Add/Remove programs Remove Norton AV

once completed.
BOOT TO DISK AGAIN
Change the shell to shell=explorer.exe (repeat the above step to change the shell=)

Reboot

All the best

Alex

War1,
I tried the restore. I tried to go back as far as possible, which was  March 31. It was unsuccessful. I then went to April 8, again it wouldn't restore.  I tried April 30.  I started at 7:51 and it is now 8:25. It shows it is halfway through. The screen states it should only take a few moments, so I am assuming I am frozen, which is the problem I originally had with my system. It would freeze up intermittently and I had to always shut it down. I couldn't even get through a scandisk. The blue screen problem occured after. I was trying to get that fixed so that I could get back to the freezing problem.  I guess my system is cursed.
Did you disable background programs before running restore?  Did your run it from DOS?

You may have to reinstalll Windows ME.  Install Windows over itself. You will not lose data, even though you should always back up your data.

Boot up with the Windows CD. If the CD is not bootable, boot up with a startup disk. If you don't have one, download one from www.bootdisk.com . Type setup or E:\setup , where E is your CD-ROM drive.

If you don't have the Windows CD, the system files may be in the CABS folder. From a:> type "c:\windows\options\cabs\setup" without the quotes and hit ENTER.

I couldn't accept that I couldn't do a restore, so I tried again with a June date HA! it worked! Yeah! thanks!!!
I thought for sure the system was hosed from all the freezes that a restore wouldn't help, but it did.
Thanks a bunch!
DLP, glad you found a restore point that works for you. :)
