NT Partition Limit

Does anyone no a way of getting around  the NTFS 4GB partition limit in Windows NT 4 Workstation. The PCs we are installing were I work have 11GB disks and I would like to be able to configure them with a single 11GB partition

You simply can't with WinNt 4.  Maybe considere using Win2k or 2 partitions

A way around it is during the installation to make a boot partition of about 10Mb (C:) and to put the system on the rest of the drive 11Gb NTFS (D:)

Actually you can install NT4 directly to a larger than 4Gb C: but during boot NT4 can only address the first 4Gb and if some files (ie during a upgrade) move around to an area that is out of reach of this 4Gb addressing area that is needed during the boot you are toast. and have an unusable And unrepairable machine.

the problem is that when win NT first installed the partition must be
FAT , and after that (if you choose to have NTFS ) the installation
would convert the partition to NTFS.

The FAT file system has this 4GB limitation, as solution you might
want to try partition pagic 5.0 it can convert and resize the partition.

I never done it but it should work

Yes you can convert the partition with Partition magic and even enlarge it to the 11Gb. You can also partition the disc in an existing NT4 installation and make a NTFS partiton of 11Gb put the disk back in the first computer and start the installation of NT4 and choose to install it on the existing 11Gb NTFS partition. BUT you will still have the 4Gb addressing limit problem during boot whatever you do.

Thanks for the contribution everyone - I am starting to think that the easiest  solution is going to be Partition Magic. I have never used Partiton Magic myself but a co-worker tells me that it is ok for Windows 9x but not that good for NT. Is there any truth in this ?

I have ued Partition Magic 4.0 on WinNT workstations without any problems. The largest drive I had was 15Gb. Just bear in mind that if for any reason that drive goes bad, you will not be able to boot with a Fat32 disk and view the contents. You will have to piggyback that drive. At least thats what I have had to do.

Yin  I had a problem deciding who should get the points on this one but finally decided to favour your answer. Because you suggested a work around for the problem and was also the first expert to point out the dangers of going beyond the 4 GB limit.  I have decided to be guided by your advice and  to stick with the 4 GB limit.

Thanks for the advice and thanks to everyone else for the information and suggestions you provided.
