minimum programs running

I have both WINXP pro and home.  I dislike programs running in the background that I have no control over.
When I hit CNTRL-ALT-DEL I see many programs running.  I have the utility to choose what programs will be running when I start my system (PC MAG's startup Cop).. My queston is -  what are the absolute minimum programs that must be running?  (what are their names) Any difference between PRo and Home?

TIA

absolute minimum ?? none

You do not need startup cop, you can use MSCONFIG to stop programs from loading at boot

Start, RUN, type MSCONFIG and hit Ok, then click on the Startup tab, uncheck any program you do not want to load.
When my computer starts up and I hit (Ctrl,Alt,Delete) there is nothing listed there
Perhaps you are referring to what you see listed under the "Processes" tab. If so then some of these are services which some you can control when they are launched by opening the Serivice manager utility.

Start > Run services.msc

However you must be very carful with fooling around with services that you don't what they do.

I was wondering that also, but he did say (Ctrl,Alt,Delete)
I agree with "be careful" messing with processes tab
Yeah Ray I agree but I thought I would add another twist to this story. LOL

sounds like a question I once asked as to whether systray was required as well as explorer. just had a look in my processes & there are quite a lot there with SYSTEM as the user name. 1 or 2 LOCAL SERVICE and 1 NETWORK SERVICE.
the rest are under my own user name. I'd start with these and probably leave the SYSTEM & SERVICE ones alone. Be aware you may be disabling essential programs like firewall & antivirus so if you're not sure leave it running.
I think you hit the nail on the head there Dean.  :-)

Was hard to choose who to award the points to on this one.
I enjoyed the discussion, but I better close this now.

Thanks one and all.............
