Switching from Networking with Dialup to Cable
Started off with 4 computers sharing the dialup internet connection through a hub with my computer acting as gateway with Sygate Home Networking software. Finally got cable and this is what's happened. Modem that I bought is a Motorola Surfboard 4200, 4 port broadband router is from DLink (DI-604). I hooked everything up according to the manuals and was having trouble accessing the router. Realizing that my firewall (Sygate) might be blocking me access so I disabled it and took it out of the startup. Was able to access the router to program it but wasn't able to access the internet through the cable modem. removed all references of the dialup and used the many wizards to setup the new connection and still no go. Uninstalled Sygate HN. Removed NIC and modem from Device Mangler and rebooted to refresh the hardware but now I can't even access the router! Bypassed router and rebooted cable modem but I still can't access the internet. hooked up computer #2 straight to the cable modem and it ran great, but then again, puter #2 has never used a dialup or even a modem to access the internet. I've tried changing settings and even swapped out my NIC and CAT5 cable but I still can't get it to work. When I called tech support for my ISP (Comcast) and we went through all the settings and hardware they said it some kind of configuration problem or my TCP/IP stacks are corrupt and need to be rebuilt. I've done this in Win98se many, many times but haven't a clue in XP Pro. Extra points to the one that gets me going with the router and all. Help!!!!

what happens when you ping?
Just checking your ip scheme. d-link uses 192.168.0.1 as it's default ip
make sure no other NIC's on your network have this
ip's for the machines should be
192.168.0.(2-254)
mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
enable dns and use either the dns ip of your isp or 192.168.0.1 and disable wins
reset the router (the manual, pdf on the cd) should tell you how to reset it. not just power off, but reset

Highly unlikely that tcp got corrupt on all machines

There is a reset button on the router which I've already done. I had previously taken all the settings in My Network Places and removed them so the IP is now set to "Obtain and IP address automatically ".
The thing is, is that I can't even use the cable modem by itself which I think needs to be the first step at this point.
When I ping my ISP it says something about a file missing (can't remember now) so me and the tech tried going through Add/Remove Windows components to unload the networking stuff and reload it but it still didn't help.
Any other ideas Steve?
BTW, I'm having no problems with the dialup even though I've removed it and reinstalled it over and over through all this. I even swapped the NIC and modem ports.

Never said it was corrupt on ALL the boxes......just mine. Cable works fine on John's box which is the hardest to setup for networking or internet access even. I didn't try the router on his because I can't use his as the gateway because it's almost never on.

shouldn't need a machine on to act as the gateway. I have a d-link 704
and it acts as the gateway
I've got dsl, but the setup should be about the same
modem to the wan port, and machines to the lan port, router and modem always on, machines act independently
manually set my ip info as stated above

No Firewall and ICS is not enabled. One of the error codes I had gotten at one point was 678 (can't remember what I had done to get this though) and I was able to ping the router in the beginning.
ASKER
Why do you manually set the IP info with DHCP?
what does ipconfig /all show?
and post the results of
ping 127.0.0.1
ping <own ip>
ping 192.168.0.1

As you know network settings can drive one bananas.
You most likely have tried everything one could suggest.
I don't see where your isp requires you to register the MAC address.
If that's the case, do so and try again.
If not, disconnect the pc from the net, insert the xp cd and when it comes up install choose repair.
This will install xp over itself.
Install the router, modem and this one pc.
Follow your router instructions and when all working, plug in the other pc.

That's all fine, well and good but why can't I use the cable modem directly?
I leave my router's dhcp on, but since it is a small network, I set my own ip (I trust me more than M$ dhcp). Also wioth static ip's I cna use lmhosts files, and know where each machine is (ip) and don't have to worry about the ip's getting switched
two reasons come to mind.
corrupt sys files on pc and no MAC address registered if required by isp.

Also, I would suggest you follow the directions of the router exactly so that you can backtrack during install.
Customize when all's working well.

Steve, IP shows 0.0.0.0 and same with the Subnet Mask.
centerv, sorry I was posting at the same time you were. When you say register the MAC addy do you mean on my computer? Why didn't I have to register it on puter #2 then? If that's what you meant that is. The MAC for the modem was registered with my ISP and tested as good and puter 2 has no problem and I didn't change a thing on it. Just plugged it in and pulled up a webpage immediately. And I haven't had to install anything on this box as far as the cable modem or the router goes. I'm running straight CAT5 so no new hardware will be found. We've been networked (4 puters) for over 2 years now with a minimum of probs, but this is biting my "you know what" right now. LOL

try manually setting it as specified above, connect it to the router and see if it will ping

centerv, I had the PDF file open at the same time as the options were open for the router so I could do it step by step. At this point I can't even access the router much less the cable modem.
As for repairing the install of XP I can't boot from the CD for some reason and if I run it through windows it doesn't give me that option. The last time I tried that I ran into all sorts of problems with hardware drivers and such.

Some isp require you to register the MAC address of the nics and routers as well as the modems.
Not sure about yours but worth finding out what they have on their files.
If you needed to register the modem, there's a good chance they need the rest.

The router wants to use 192.168.0.100-192.168.0.20 0 as the range for DHCP. So should I try just setting it to 192.168.0.100? ISP said to set everything to obtain automatically.

ISP says all I have to register is the modem and this was already done. They told me how to reset the modem and the order in which everything has to be setup.

Q? I set it as 192.168.000.222, subnet 255.255.255.0 and the gateway as 192.168.000.001 (router). Do you think this will work? Do I need DNS settings at all?
off for a quick 9 holes, will check in when I get back
first ping the router, should get a response, then try and connect with IE http://192.168.0.1
if so connect with the cable modem and check the dns settings, and add them to your settings and you should be good to go

BTW, this is really a learning experience for me. As an ex-data satellite installer all I had to do was installe the server and load the software after pointing the dish, but this is a real PITA. LOL You guys are great. :-)
Oh come on Steve who you kidding. You are off for a quick 9 drinks. LOL
Hi Sandi. Sorry I don't have pearls of wisdom that can help you with this problem. :>(

facts
ok on isp
As mentioned, the router runs by itself independent of the pc.
You need the pc browser to access it and make setting changes.
Once the router is set up, the pc, any of them can be shut off with no effect to the router.
The pc you're using to configure router doesn't let you do a repair with xp disk.
Modem works on another pc.
My conclusion
you have corrupt files on the setup pc you're using.
Use another pc to get your router/internet configured.
info
the repair/reinstall option of xp is no different than win98.
The drivers install will be retained, unless you have a bad installation interfering with it.
Good luck with it.
Won't be ignoring you tomorrow. Not available.
hi Crazy
No "LIST" on this one??? LOL

I've been leaning toward the corrupt files as you suggest centerv just wanted to avoid any other problems. I'll try to get to it when I get home in the morning. Is there anything you can suggest I do or remove before I persue this endeavor?
If you can't boot from cd, copy the i386 folder from cd to drive and also the "setup" from the cd and put in folder.
Use it to start your install, much as windows\options\cabs.
Still suggest you get the router setup with another pc, as that should be a straight forward process overall and determine that the hardware/router/cables are not the problem.

On all the XP boxes try this:
command prompt>
netsh int ip reset resetip.log
command prompt>
netsh int ip reset resetip.log
For your NIC cards what duplex are they running at?

Well this has certainly been a learning experience and I really appreciate your suggestions centerv but I'm afraid the points will have to go to Steve. I changed the IP address in networking props and I was able to access the router again but I still couldn't get the internet so I checked the FAQ in the router and found that I DID need to enter a DNS entry as the IP of the router and had to reset the router to factory defaults and run the wizard again, then I rebooted the cable modem. Now all of the computers are happily accessing the internet.
Thanks very mucho Steve and using every single point I have is well worth your effort and simple solution. I was up and running in no time. And I learned something to boot! LOL
