Need to re-install tcp/ip on Windows XP

The tcp/ip installation on my Toshiba 1800-S204 Windows XP Pro machine is bad. (I think trying to install Timbuktu 2K or VPN client may have messed it up.) It is unable to ping localhost.

How do I get tcp/ip re-installed under WinXP Pro?

Toshiba tech support tried to re-install the 'LAN Supplment Driver' from their recovery CD, but that doesn't appear to have done anything. If needed, I suppose I can restore the whole machine from the recovery CD, but that's more of a last resort.

Thanks for your help.

Try this:
netsh int ip reset resetip.log then reboot
also check your binding order in network properties advanced and make sure that tcp/ip is checked (from the menu where your connectoids are located)
gotta run now!
If none of the above work,

I would backup the drive and try to remove all networking protocols and drivers, then the devices, then clean up the registry settings,  reboot, and add them back in.

If that does not help, then use the restore CD, and before you play with the settings, backup your system State !

I hope this helps !

Tried the netsh command to restore the registry. This did make changes but it still doesn't work.  When I try to ping '127.0.0.1', it returns: Unable to contact IP driver, error code 2.

Unfortunately, under Windows XP, tcp/ip can't be uninstalled. I'm going to install WinXP SP1 which may restore the tcp/ip drivers for me. According to the KB article above, this error can be caused by 1.) Corrupt TCP drivers, 2.) Bad network adapter, and 3.) Another service interfering with IP. Maybe my network card has gone bad? I need to try a couple of other things here.
you could use system restore to undo the changes made by the software you installed if you got a restore point setup prior to the software installation...

If you want to reinstall TCP/IP, go to the Control Panel, then to Network and Internet Connections, and then Network Connections. Right-click the connection that's causing problems, and choose properties. In the properties window you have to option to uninstall TCP/IP.
