I have the same cdrw/dvd combo drive and I have more or less the same problem. There are certain pre-recorded cds it won´t read and now it won´t recognise blank cds, so i can´t use the rewriter.

my cd-rw drive is driving me crazy. when i first bought my laptop i was able to use it without any problems. now i find that i cannot read Cd-roms at all. the drive just tries to read the cd-rom but fails . The weird thing is that it can read dvds without any problem at all!! Plus if i switch my laptop off for about two hours and then power it on again , if i insert a cd-rom it might sometimes be able to read it but any subsequent cd-roms pushed in are not read!! i have looked for the latest drivers but there seems to be none for this model. anyway the device manager seems to indicate the device is working normally!! i have also cleaned the lense using a cleaning cd with no success!!Its a cd-rw /dvd combo (Matshita CW-8121). I have a laptop using AMD athlon processor.

Can read DVDs but not Cd roms !!
