My Windows media player has been damaged making it crash now and then. How can I reinstall all media player components without having to reinstall WinXP?

To reinstal Windows Media Player in Windows XP:
- Click "start" | "run" | and type the following commands one by one (press enter):
"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSectio
"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSectio
(Point it to the Windows XP CD)
If WMP problem is not fixed, restart your machine
As an alternative, you may be better off using Windows XP's cool System Restore functionality. It's on the Start Menu under "Help and Support".
As a FURTHER alternative, Evey points out you can try to repair Windows XP itself (which will more fully repair WMP for XP along with it)-
To repair Windows XP:
Boot from the Windows XP CD. and perform a repair installation.
"Do not choose Repair when it is offered. That will take you to the Repair Console and you don't want to be there.
Choose Upgrade The installer will find your existing XP installation and offer to repair it.
Now you choose Repair.
No loss in settings, programs or data. You will lose any patches/updates, though. "
Hope this helps!
i once had a similar problem, what i did was..right click on all the partitions one by one, choose properties->tools->check now, chose the option "check for file system errors"... got the message that the check would be done the next time the pc was rebooted, so i clicked ok..rebooted...the check took place..and the WMP crashes disappeared :)

Tunheim,
there should be a setup file for Windows Media Player (x) in the wmp root directory.
(C;\Progra~1\Windows Media Player)
If it's not there, download the new version 9 or follow sramesh2k / jman1980 methods.
Good Luck.

Yep, it's there.
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\
Just install it again, and then it will be like new.

I've tried to reinstall, and to install the version 9. But my problem persists.
I think it might be due to divx, cause it only crahes when I try to run divx-films. How can I fix this, but still be able to wach divx-films?
