how to add win98 as a second OS
I need to add win98 as a dual-booted second OS to a machine already installed with WinXP. Existing disk structure is (roughly) 3 20GB ntfs partitions. I would like to install Win98 as a secondary OS without disturbing the XP installation, although a disk image backup of the XP partition is possible if this can not be done.
Is there any way of setting this up WITHOUT buying overpriced bloatware like PartitionMagic?
Any help appreciated.

Actually, partition magic isn't really over priced, I think the price is quite low for what it does. And the more you do, the more likely you are to use it.

1) get two partitions
2) u just need to use the 98 boot disk to boot up and install the win98, Choose another Partition besides C:
say u got 2 paritions, C: is NTFS. D: is FAT
when u boot w win98 boot disk, u can install to the drive other than C:; However, that C: might not be the "C: for XP", since it is NTFS, win98 bootdisk cannot recognize it, so D: will be the C: instead.
so after u boot up the win98 boot disk, check the c: with dir... see where it is the C: for XP, if not, then u can safely install the win98, and have dual boots

If C is NTFS then Win98 won't install regardless if D is FAT32. C needs to be FAT32 so Win98 can put its boot files on it. Since C is not FAT32 then Win98 will not install. If both C and D were FAT32 then Win98 could be installed on D but Win98 would still put its boot files on C.
really it thought it only happens to NT, cuz it requires to user the first 2Gs...
I guess I didn't install 98 for a long time LOL

Well C can be FAT of FAT32 but not NTFS for Win98 to work.

but i did put a win98 boot disk it boots up and read c: (fake c:, since it can't read NTFS), it just that the c: is my d: (FAT/32, it has the content of my D:), and there should be no problem on installing it on that fake C:
since the NTFS can't be read from boot disk, so boot disk choose the drive that is FAT/32, and make it as a Primary partition and it is active, and become c:
i m gonna test it!

I tested it... can't setup on the win98 setup screen... but i think there should be a work around way
say make the D: to be active under BIOS then win 98 can install it.. it's like tricking the setup or system to use D: as the primary partition....

Yeah but you would have to set the active everytime you wanted to change which OS to boot to. A little time comsuming in comparsion to having a boot menu to select from. A boot manager may be anogher option.

well after that, u can set C: active again and modify the boot.ini under the winxp to have dual boots works since xp have a built in one
No just modifying the boot.ini isn't enough. The boot files for Win98 will still need to be on C (FAT or FAT32) for XP to run a dual boot. Plus for a dual boot to work with XP a file called bootsect.dos needs to be created which XP will do but only if there is a C (FAT or FAT32)
o yeah...i forgot about the boot sector ...that's absolutely true , u r the expert of experts.... ;)
