Do a "telnet www.yahoo.com 80" in Command Prompt.  That should tell you if you can connect by port 80.  More than likely it's your browser settings.  Look at your Internet Properties in Control Panel, especially the Connections tab.  I would go straight to your LAN Settings to look for any proxy settings.  Create another user profile to see if the problem exists with the new profile also.  Good luck.

Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer

Method 1:
To repair or reinstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP, complete the following procedure while you are logged on as an administrator:
Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK. Note that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.
Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
Complete an in-place upgrade of Windows XP, a repair of Windows XP, or reinstall Windows XP.For additional information about how to complete an in-place upgrade or repair of Windows XP, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

I wish I could get ahold of these machines before Monday I am eager to try this out... I don't want to take AdAware out of my bag of goodies, I will let you know what happens
Some things i learned of doing cable internet installs a while back

When you can ping from cmd/dos but cannot connect via explorer, (even if you type ip adresses??) Was told its a DNS prob if you cant get to yahoo.com.. but can get to 63.40.92..etc  if you cant connect to anything (domain or ip addy) its a winsock prob..

Put a new vs of winsock/replace the old one and typically the probs solved. You can do a system restore, or do the winsock fix.. winsock fix is the same as the sys restore, but faster ;)
