xp system file missing/corrupt

Turned on my system and xp won't load says windows/system32/config/system file missing or corrupt.  type "r" to repair etc..  Luckily i also have 98 on seperate hard drive so the system still works.

I booted off the xp disk and hit r but have no clue what to do when it dumps me to d:

The system file is there so I'm assuming it's corrupt should i delete it and reinstall xp?

Yeah, i got the same thing today. ANd because i hit the reset button while the system was booting. Then when i tried to get back into windows i got that error. So, maybe it was accessing or changing a file the same time i was reseting it.. Stupid thing..  I will try your suggestion with the setup.. Thnx. cross my fingers... (it's my mom's computer and she's on vacation)
