asked on
Roaming profiles in NT Domain.
Hello everyone,
I would like to have detailed instructions on how to setup a roaming profile for a user.
We have an NT4.0 server Domain, 1 PDC, 1 BDC.
The clients PCs are a mix of Windows XP PRO, Windows 2000 Profesional, Windows NT4.0 Workstation.
The user logs in through a VPN from her house also, and it is authenticated by a Windows 2000 Server, on a different Domain all by itself, after that the user is authenticated/logged onto the NT4.0 PDC.
We also have a Sonicwall SOHO/10 firewall.
The most important part is the LAN not the VPN. In case that you are wondering, or if that makes it more difficult.
If you need more information, I will be happy to provide it.
Thank you for your help.

I created a shared folder for the roaming profiles, then I logged in with my user name but it created a new profile, it did not copy the one that I had previously.
How can I have the desktop settings that I had before?
Also there is another user that says that has this error message:
Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded.
Check that you are connected to the network, or that your network is functioning correctly.
If this problem persists contact your system administrator.
Detail: The system cannot find the file specified.

Guarana,
When you say this:
HOME Folder: \\server1\users\jdoe
Roaming Folder: \\server1\users\jdoe\Profi le (is this "Profile" a folder?)
Thank you,
LuisP

Mark & I disagree on this, but I like to place the profile in the user's HOME folder. The security is already taken care of, and it's out of the way. Just be sure to train your users to LEAVE THE PROFILE FOLDER ALONE. Here's what it will look like in User Manager for Domains:
HOME Folder: \\server1\users\jdoe
Roaming Folder: \\server1\users\jdoe\Profi
The next time the user logs off, the profile will be uploaded to the server. If it takes the user a LONG time to log on/off, then there is probably a LOT of files on the Desktop or in "My Documents". You'll need to train the users to keep the files OFF of the local hard drive, and to store them on the server instead
