Server Pushing an OS
A server push of Windows XP OS.....can I do it.....and if so, how?
THANKS
THANKS
You can't push it, but you can use a server share to perform and administrative installation. You can't use Ghost unless the HAL on all machines is identical and you have a method to change the SID on all machines that will be on a domain.
You will need:
1. A network boot disks that boots to the share you've created.
2. A share on a server that accomodates the necessary files for the XP admin installation.

First....thank you zefiro I'm looking into that.
Second....Dew thank you as well but I have questions for you.
What is an administrative install and how is it different from a push(i think it means I have to actively go do things to the computer is that correct), and with your plan I have to go to each computer and use said boot disk to boot from our network booting to say the Windows XP CD copy on a server? I kind of like that idea if I'm understanding it right, if I'm not well then.... and pardon me for being stupid but what are HAL and SID standing for.
Thanks so much,
Luke

Additional: How do I create that boot disk(the network one)? I'm reading about this on Microsofts website, that how the question poped up.
Sysprep takes care of almost any HAL disparity as well as the SID issue. I've successfully transferred images from desktops to laptops and between different vendor computers.
Also, if the boot disk solution is acceptable to you, I would recommend it. We have run several imaging projects up to about 150 workstations and we much prefer to use the boot disk method even though it takes extra effort.
As far as the HAL goes, go to Device Manager on the workstations and look to see what is listed under Computer-->you will generally see something mentioning APCI. If all of your computers have that listed you are probably good to go with this solution.
As far as the boot disk, Ghost has a utility included to help you with that, you will have to know what Network Cards are running on the workstations, ghost should be able to handle almost any of them except the latest Intel VM cards. Ghost also includes a utility to add drivers to the floppy if you need it. (If this sounds like an ad, maybe it is, we always had to create our boot disks manually, and this thing makes it nice)
Gotchas include
multi-processor machines vs. single processor machines--you'll probably want to make separate images for each
SCSI vs IDE hard drives--a single image of XP should work on both, but definitely expect problems and be relieved if you don't have any.
Hope this helps a bit

Thank you both.....I would like to give you both points but can't..can I. Anyway RIS failed for most cause of not good NICs we are trying Ghost soon, SMS is not a choice as we don't use it currently. We are only a division of a university that doesn't need it yet. Again thank you both I will be back to update and give points.
Well gee, don't get carried away, just give me a "B".

Well I still had to go to every machine with a CD because nothing but RIS worked and that only worked on 2 so none of these answered the question
