Getting Cannot find ///Fast hardlock driver error after upgrading to Windows XP

I upgraded my PC to Windows XP.  Now I get the error "Cannot find ///Fast hardlock driver" in a window titled "HL VDD - Hardlock Virtual Drive" whenever I either run a DOS application, or try to use the CDRW to install programs.  When I click OK on the window, it closes, and so does whatever I was trying to run that produced the error in the first place.  Both of these things worked before in Windows 2000.  I also got an errorwhen upgrading to XP where XP said the Dell installed software DirectCD3 was incompatible with XP.  Is this related and if so, is there an upgrade I could get for this?  Several non-Dos programs don't work from system32 directory either like sysedit, and command.com.

Thanks, but when I click on My Computer and do a find, it doesn't find any instance of hardlock.vxd in the registry.  Is this the correct way to search?
did u install the software hardlock driver or something.

My advice is to, disable the application from startup (if you cant find the vxd in registry)

click start | run | msconfig | startup | "disable all"
restart windows.

Best thing to do is a clean install instead of upgrade install. Clean install will erase all the data on the disk and freshly install XP, avoiding all the upgrade issues.

XP Clean Install guide:

None of the above were very helpful, so I looked into this myself. For me, the hardlock driver came as part of the Electronics Information System - EURAS. This uses the hardlock driver. To uninstall the hardlock driver and stop the error messages, you need HLINST.EXE - this was in \Tools\Hardlock\DRIVER on my EURAS CD, but is also available from ftp://ftp.aladdin.de/pub/hardlock/.

To uninstall the hardlock driver completely, cd to the same directory as hlinst.exe and type hlinst -df at a command prompt. This does a complete, forced delete of the driver. I would assume you would need to be logged into the XP machine with Administrator Privs to do this successfully.

After doing this, the annoying error message has never re-appeared.

If you still need to use EURAS, you may need to install the 32 bit version of the Hardlock driver - probably from ftp://ftp.aladdin.de/pub/hardlock/hldrv32.zip, didn't look into this, it was more important for me to get rid of it, than the use EURAS.

Hope this helps someone.
in answer to the original problem of 'cannot find hardlock' - reinstalling the driver seems to be the solution to fix this.
(I had this error trying to install a dell chipset driver - went clean once hardlock driver found)
