Constant Restarting of Windows

ok, heres my problem. I'm not exactly a computer genius, but I'll try to explain my problem the best I can. I'll start with the beginning.

The specs on my computer originally went as followed before I had this problem. Motherboard: SOYO KT600 ULTRA platinum edition, AMD 1800+, 512 3200 Dual DDR. When my computer ran with the 1800+, I had no problem with videos, games, browsing the internet, etc. Than I installed my AMD 3000+ 400 fsb into my motherboard. EVerything was fine at first, than after a couple of days, my computer would sparatically freeze, usually with a different error at times. Most of the times it was during watching videos and playing games. So at first I reformatted my hard drive, thinking the drivers installed were conflicting with the new processor. Now I jus froze again watching an anime episode.

I installed my video drivers, i have an ATI Radeon 7800 vivo. I installed all the drivers for my mother board, and I installed all my window's update drivers.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should check/do to maybe fix this problem. I was thinking maybe it was a BIO's problem, but i would like to see what you guys have to say first. If any of you need any detailed information, just ask and I'll try the best of my ability to give it.

Thanks again.

Sean,

Can you give the error messages cos that will give a whole lot idea of what and which is the one creating problems ?

Sean,

The things that I would check immediately for problems would be:

1. Power supply. That processor needs a lot and it needs to be a quality power supply.

2. BIOS issues: This has always been a big issue with these types of problems.

3. Memory issues: If you have two modules, pull one and look for errors, then swap with the one removed.
By the way, that is a 3000 XP processor, correct?

You did boot into the BIOS and verify that the BIOS recognized the processor correctly?

You did reset the BIOS (CMOS) to it's default settings when you changed the processor, correct?

Also check the version of the BIOS..... maybe you need to upgrade to support the processor.

Probably a problem with the power. That's a lot of stuff to be sucking juice, even more so when taxing the graphics (movies, games). What kind of power supply are you using?

Aside from that, could be heat. Open up the case and just set a floor fan to blow into it. Not a permanent solution of course, but will help you rule out that problem. That is of course assuming that your heatsink is seated well with thermal grease on your processor.
have you checked the electrical requirments for the different cpu's? even a difference of a few millivolts can and will cause problems like you are having.
Must be an echo in here.
not an echo. just verbage a little easier to understand :0)

At what temperature is your CPU running?  Is your CPU fan big enough to cool a larger processor?  It is a common fault, especially when watching video clips or playing games for the cpu to become hot and crash out, this can sometimes end in the blue screen of death or it may just switch off all together...

Wow you guys are great help so far, I was away from my computer all day so I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner.

No error come's up, sorry I couldn't help you that much sunray :(

My BIOS was reseted (if thats a word) after I installed my processor. When my comp boots up, the processor is seen.

The motherboard is SOYO's newest board, but I'll check to see if the BIOS has been updated anyway.

as far as the ATI drivers go, I installed the one for high speed when I first originally put the processor in, that was after i reformatted and reinstalled windows.

So basically what I'll be looking for is:

     1) Make sure my BIOS is updated
     2) Check my power supply (I'm almost certain its enough, i forgot the Watts but I checked before I installed my MOBO, I'll check again)
     3) Check the temperature

Alright i'm going to try those steps out first. I'll give you an update soon enough. Thanks so far for all the help.

as stated in the post from FreekHendriks:
CPU Support:  http://www.soyousa.com/kb/kbdesc.php?id=16

Your mobo will support your 3000+ processor only at 333 Mhz FSB
that might be your problem
oops, nevermind didn't see you had the ULTRA PLATINUM version
just forget about my previous post.
Did you use thermal grease when you installed the cooler on your processor, processors run extremely hot these days.

You also might have bought a damaged processor, try to test it in another computer, or go to the shop where you've bought it and ask them if you may test another one, just to sort this out.
These intermitent problems are usually memory related. If you have some more DDR ram, try to swap it out and see how you go. I could bet its your memory i've seen this problem about 10 times and changing the RAM has always worked. (except once, where a quiet pc fan was slightly too big for the motherbord and was scratching some transistors)

With these problems it should be the first thing to try, if you processor was damaged your bios would have difficulty auto-detecting it.

Best of luck
Because of your topic - is your computer freezing or restarting? To me, the temperature issue seems most important. Are you using the same cooling device as before on the 1800+? The 3000+ generates much more heat therefore the old fan is probably not powerful enough.

We used the thermal grease on the cpu, me and my father will look in my comp today to see if anything was put in wrong.

As far as the memory goes, its very new, I bought it about 2 weeks ago. I'm thinkin it may be a temperature issue. Here I'll link you guys to the MOBO, RAM, and CPU I use.

MOBO: http://www.soyousa.com/products/proddesc.php?id=256
RAM: http://www.ramhq.com/hardware/partinfo-id-10643.html
CPU: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=120741

Those are the new products I had. I couldn't find the video card link because its such an old product. I know off hand though

VIDCARD: ATI Radeon 7200 64 megs ViVo

My father thinks it may be a PCI problem, because its an old video card. All my freezes have no error messages either.

Thanks again I'll keep you posted.

I'm leaning towards What Dew just said.

When I explained the same problem to my father, he explained to me exactly what dew said. The only problem was we weren't certain. I wanted to see if another suggestion like that would come up. Since dew mentioned it, I'm goin to order the Nvidia 5600 256 meg card tonight. Thanks alot everyone for your help. I'm accepting Dew's post as my answer.
The Nvidia card is a nice card, but make sure that you confirm that it comes with Windows XP verified drivers.

Yeah I will thank you.

As of now though what i decided to do is lower the speed of my processor and ram through bios, so it wont over work my videocard. As of now I haven't had a problem yet. i have to hold off on that card because I'm the one paying for my computer stuff and I'd like to save my money up once in a while.

Thanks again
Given ATI's rise to prominence recently with their 9700 Radeons etc, you may want to consider them.
