Registry Key corrupted when removing (Default) REG_SZ

Hello,

Registry Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oracle gives me an error "Error while opening key"  when I click on it to remove it; I beleive my problem is that I deleted all sub-keys and values including the "(Default) REG_SZ """ key.

Does anyone have a good tip on how to get rid of this key so that I can re-install Oracle on this laptop (it's the boss' laptop, and he needs it Monday!)

ASKER

gemarti,

Tried your suggestion logged on as local "Administrator" got: Error: Access denied!"

Could access to this key be restricted to the user who created it or is this just a "false" error because of corruption?

Thanks!

sramesh2k,

OK, it is a permission issue; after digging thruogh it a bit I am finding that the key's owner is the regular laptop user and no other permissions are set or granted. I started the operation still logged in as him and so had no problem deleting the sub-keys; when I rebooted and logged on as Administrator I could not delete the empty key (still can't it will not let me give Administrator ownership or Full rights on the key). I'll have to wait til the user comes in on Monday and logs on I suppose.

Thanks to you and gemarti!

Ola, You can still change the ownership to default administrator using take ownership of registry key.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310426#4

so, no need to wait till the user comes.

** You can take ownership of a registry key if you are logged on as an administrator, or if you have been specifically assigned the permission to take ownership of the registry key by the current owner **
