I am prepared to do a repair if necessary...I don't want to reinstall XP. I have an SP1 slip-streamed version of of the XP install disk. This thread is just to exhaust all other possibilities.
Have you logged on as the administrator, not a user with admin privileges, and tried it?

Sunray:
Suggestion 1: Already looked at it. My comments at beginning of thread reflect the MS troubleshooting guide
Suggestion 2: Already looked at it. No repair option.
Suggestion 3: Already looked at it. Same as your suggestion #1.
Suggestion 4: Already looked at it. Recopied/Reextracted the two DLLs in question from the install to no avail.
Suggestion 5: Already looked at it. Makes a basic assumption that you can actually run system restore, which I cannot.
Thanks for trying, keep 'em coming.

Glad I could help!
I have exactly the same problem. Can someone give me the detailed instructions on how to fix it?
I wanted to add a note of thanks and some additional comments for users with Windows XP and SP2 installed.
I had the same problem, but got an error telling me that I had the wrong version of windows installed due to SP2.
I have the sp2 installation file on a CD in it original .exe format
Before running the fix (Listed here for reference):
rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSecti on C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf <this presumes XP is installed on drive "C">
I had to unpack Windows SP2 to a folder on my drive. The command to unpack the folder is:
D:\WindowsXP-SP2.exe -x
This assumes that your file is on the D: in the root folder and where the SP2 compressed file name is "WindowsXP-SP2.exe"
I then had to browse to find the compressed file sr.sy_ in the \i386 folder. Which the installer recognize as the correct file , I then had to put in my original Windows XP installation CD and browse for one addition file that was needed to complete the process.
Upon rebooting everything is working again.
Thanks to all who added to the discussion above.

SFC /SCANNOW
Then test the system.
