IE will not open
I just got one of my PC's from the field it's Windows XP Home edition, I changed all the settings, to get it on the network and it seems to be working fine, but IE is not working, everytime I go to IE it says page not displayed or the server is down, but I have tried pinging and it pings , I have pinged Yahoo, MSN , but when I go  to the actual IE browser nothing happens, it does say something about Hot bar it displays local settings. aplications, hot bar something laike that, don't remember deleting anything , and I am pretty sure IE worked when it was out in the fiels, I can not ask the user , she is gone, my question is how do I get IE to work again, I tried reinstalling IE but when it starts looking for the internet , gives me an error, what else should I try.
Thanks for your support and cooperation.
Sincerely
Mariae

Did u try pinging by IP or FQDN

yahoo IP: 66.218.71.83
FQDN: www.yahoo.com

If it pings by IP but doesn't by FQDN---> Most probably winsock is corrupt, OR any firewall, OR programs like new.net

If it pings by both-->> IE is corrupt and need to be repaired or reinstalled

Try repairing IE
Add/Remove->Microsoft Internet Explorer->Click Remove and chose repair or restore option

Otherwise, To reinstall IE, U can try either Repair install of windows

You said:

>>>it's Windows XP Home edition, I changed all the settings, to get it on the network and it seems to be working fine, but IE is not working.

You changed settings to get this machine on the network, but you make no mention of the settings changed or the type of network. Usually XP home does not work correctly on a true domain network without some significant changes, but it will work on a work group.

It may be that this is a network issue, not an IE or XP issue. More info would be great.

Dennis

I susspect it is an DNS error.
If you have an server/router/gateway , you have to tell your PC were it must connect to to get the information (like web pages).

In IE .... DISABLE "Automatically detect settings".
In the network settings..... set DNS (in TCP/IP settings) to the IP-adres of that computer/router/gateway.

That works at my place.....

Freek

I'd also check Tools|Internet Options|Connections|Lan Settings and see if there's a proxy server configured. If it's configured for a proxy that doesn't exist on your network it would cause these problems.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
