System files missing or corrupted

I got this error message :-

<<<< Window could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt :
\Windows\system32\config\system >>>

I tried to boot from XP CD to repair it but it keep booting from HDD instead and display same error message again.

My computer configuration is as follows :-
(1) WinME is on Primary HDD, while XP OS is on Secondary HDD.
(2) First booting device is HDD1.

How to solve this problem ?

you need to go into your bios and choose the cd as the fist boot device

Have learned something new today. I couldn't boot from XP CD because I didn't "press any key to boot from CD" , quick enough. And the system does wait and will seek the next second boot device.

Manage to solve my problem after following mhambridge's comment.

Thanks to StevenLewis and mhambridge

Cheers..

i  have notebook acer pentium I ram 64 hdd 20gb
i use windows 98. sometimes the cursor move every where.
i dont know what happen. is my computer got the virus?
my windows system is ok. can you tell me what happened?
and the solutions about the problem.
Does your notebook have a mouse nipple in the centre of the keyboard?  The mouse nipple is part of the motherboard and when they get old and worn, the cursor will sometimes carry on moving around the screen.  Have seen this on a number of occasions.  Sadly the solution to it has been to replace the motherboard.
Not quite sure of the connection between hery purnomo's problem and the original problem!

HOWEVER, I have a 5-year old notebook (from MBC who have disappeared); CPU is a Pentium 233MMX with 64Mb and 4Gbyte HDD.  I now have the same problem (although I never used to so maybe a Windows update ???).  I use a conventional mouse plugged into the PS2 socket which I find easier than the track-pad.  When I boot-up it is necessary to unplug the PS2 mouse or I get the same problem as you hery purnomo.  So if you are using a plug in mouse this may provide the answer.
P.S.  hery purnomo are you sneaking in your own, new problem to get a free solution?
i explain again i use usb mouse not built in mouse.
thanks

I saw no mention of a USB mouse.  Have you tried my suggestion of unplugging the mouse until Windows has loaded?
HELP

I am trying to install XP on a new clean harddisk.

Everytime I install XP it hangs at 37 minutes to go and then I reboot and get:

File missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system

So I formatted the disk again, changed the videocard (who knows) no other cards installed or usb mouse... Only hdd, cd, mouse, keybord and the videocard.

Tried different cd win XP, with and without servicepack.... but exactly the same error...

I can instaal 98SE, 2000 no problems!

Anyone that can give me a hint?
