I then uninstalled 'tgt-style xp' program temporarily, and removed the folders in the remaining 'tree'.
I then re-installed style xp program but cannot restore the original icon set?
In the style xp view-pane preview window, I click on each icon image, but on every click I make in that icon set I receive a message; here is an example of that message for the empty recycle bin,
"windows cannot find the C:\Program Files\TGTSoft\StyleXP\C:\W
For other icons it's the same message but asking for different .dlls (e.g. netshell.dll, wiashext.dll, mstask.dll, main.cpl, iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, MSONSEXT.DLL,; etc.etc.....).
the icon cache is EMPTY! (even though I don't know where it is on the HDD?).
I applied an icon set I got from 'theme XP' website called: 'xtoon' (it's blue) but now I don't know what has happened to the default 'windows xp' set? (it seems to have disappeared as the 'system' cannot now locate it anywhere?) - how do I get it back please?
THANK YOU.
IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND ANY OF THIS THEN PLEASE TELL ME AND I WILL TRY TO ELABORATE EVEN MORE IN MY NEXT COMMENT/MESSAGE.

System Restore is a component of Windows XP Professional that you can use to restore your computer to a previous state, if a problem occurs, without losing your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or e-mail). System Restore monitors changes to the system and some application files, and it automatically creates easily identified restore points. These restore points allow you to revert the system to a previous time. They are created daily and at the time of significant system events (such as when an application or driver is installed). You can also create and name your own restore points at any time.

Restoring your computer does not affect or change your personal data files. For information about backing up personal data files, see Backing up files and folders.

do you mean in the display properties panel, settings tab for changing the color depth/bit?
done the 'SFC' but revealled nothing i.e. there wasn't a report at the end of it or anything?
or does it just fix automatically without informing you?
Yes!

color depth change made no difference.
Deleting the Iconcache.db made no difference.
Did you try a restore point as I suggested? If that doesn't work then you may have to do a repair install.

yes I tried the restore point before the icons were changed but the restore points were unsuccessful i.e. "data incomplete" - no changes made to system! So now I'll have to try the repair/reinstallation process instead and see if that does any good at all?
Also does anyone know whats supposed to happen at the end of the 'SFC' process please?
many thanks!
Well, I've tried the repair/reinstallation process and everything seemed to be going well until 13 minutes from the end of the installation. Whilst 'registering components' a LARGE white cross appears on a red background with this message:
"UNREGMP2.EXE - ENTRY POINT NOT FOUND? The procedure entry point 'Get Iums' could not be located in the dynamic link library called 'MSDART.DLL?"
I've clicked 'OK' (the only option!) but the warning message just keeps on popping up again and again and again.......
I've used the 'reset' button on my PC tower case but the process only gets as far as it did on the previous installation attempts!
Everytime I re-boot the PC, it automatically goes back into the re-install process and gets stuck at the same stage everytime!
What can I do now to break this repetitive cycle please?
(I've just put an old HDD 'in' temporarily that only has Win-ME, ADSL, NERO and a few 'tools' on it. Ironically-for repair situations!). My XP HDD is now slaved off this old one.

"HELP!"
FYI: THESE WERE 'FREE!' WEBSITES.
pressing <ctrl+clicking on 'OK'> in the critical event window didn't work. Neither did renaming the msdart.dll to msdart32.dll. All that happened then was it said it couldn't locate the file at all on the HDD.
I noticed that the .dll is part of the mdac package. So off I went to microsoft downloads and downloaded mdac 2.8, 2.7 SP1, 2.7 RTM, 2.6 SP2.
I installed 2.8 on my old winME HDD and transferred the msdart.dll to my broken XP HDD and then re booted the installation process but all I got was: "entry point-GETTEXTEXTENTPOINTI"
I 'rolled back' to mdac 2.7 SP1 And followed the same formula as before and this time when I reached 'minute 13' configuring components in windowsXP setup it just kept on going right to the end of the installation process!!
But now I've lost all my current drivers and it's gone back to the default values. I do have CDs with drivers on them and so the first one I tried out was my external zoom broadband ADSL modem. It will install the modem OK but it won't let me install the dial-up ppp network connection. Mine is a broadband connection but it's not continuous! It has to dial 1,50 to connect to the ISP! The windowsXP wizard for making/creating new connections is no good because although I know all the parameters to setup for it;- every time I click on the "make an internet connection", it just tells me that this process is not necessary for an 'always on' broadband connection and then automatically quits the setup screen? You see before my XP HDD 'went-down', if I lost my connection I just used the CD to re-install the modem AND CONNECTION, one follows the other automatically in the setup process; or should I say it used to! Now it just installs the modem and quits leaving me with no network connection. I am following the correct procedure as I've done it a million times before! My guess is that there is something on the HDD stopping the complete installation-but what exactly? Answers 'here' please.........
When I started this thread I'd said that I was trying to re-install my default ICON SET and was told by gemarti to re-install windowsXP as the system restore facility didn't work. Well it seems I've now done the repair install of XP and fixed my own problem (msdart.dll) BUT IT HAS MADE NO DIFFERENCE TO THE DEFAULT ICON SET - it's still missing somewhere? Any more ideas about getting this back again please? Answers 'here'............
At the moment I feel as though I'm talking to myself; is there anybody out there???
Obviously, I can't accept any of the answers given so far because none of them fixed the problem and the help I found myself was from third party websites,- not 'on here'.
SO I NEED A FIX FOR:
DIAL UP BROADBAND MODEM +
DEFAULT ICON SET.
500 POINTS STILL AVAILABLE!

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers for the modem from device manager, deleting all the dialup network connections and then reinstalling from scratch?

cannot install the tweakUIpowertoy setup because the "get-dll-directory-w" entry point could not be found in the kernel32.dll (5.0.2195.6011)?
the last time this happened I installed a new copy of the same dll over the corrupted one and it fixed it! - but I can't find a copy of the dll to download from anywhere?
Anyone got it or know where to get it from please? I've seen some old win95/98 copies out there but surely they won't be any good for XP, will they?
Not yet had opportunity to look at the connection problem acsell.
you might have it there on your computers, at your end of the wire? (kernel32.dll).

yes the second link to tweak did work and it installed OK without changing the kernel32! The repair icons button did have some effect and I got some icons back. But not the printer, control panel, .txt files, image files (e.g. jpg, bmp) icons. So there are still quite a few missing. Are there any other programs out there (free or not!) that may pull them all back in? The shell32.dll now shows all the standard images in the icon viewer window (thingy) but they are not all showing up on the various programs and files? I got the music, pictures, videos & favourites folders back OK though!
Gemarti - yes I think I'll have a go with the style xp/tgtsoft UI and see if that will now restore them all again?
fajar - I have already re-installed XP from the repair point of view but as I said earlier "this did not restore the default icons". It maybe put them all back in the system somewhere but the various programs and files are not finding them?
There's obviously a file somewhere that needs editing and values modifying so that the correct icons appear. If there's no UI to do the job then I don't mind doing it manually and altering those values myself; I just need to know what and where? Or even in the registry - but again what and where?
Are there any powerful icon managers out there that could say [when it first runs] finds/scans for every icon in the PC HDD, then allows you to assign any of them to any program, folder or file type that you desire? Don't mind a fee!
thanks again everyone for your kind attention and valued help!
Guess by now you've realised that I won't give-in without a fight (even when alone!).
I got the iphile from virtualplastic and it did all that you said it would - "success!" I got the icons back and rebuilt the cache as per your instruction with regedit,- worked a treat! Many thanks!

since the (advised) reinstall of windows, I keep on getting these "can't find entry point" messages for things like creating a restore point, etc etc. Is that because (like acsell said) I need to reapply XP-SP1a; meaning that the reinstallation of XP itself has uninstalled SP1?
RSVP/a.s.a.p. , many thanks!
I'LL be re-installing SP1a soon from that link that you gave to me and looking at the two above links for the zoom modem problem after that. No harm in having a look there to see what they have to say about problem.
Many thanks!

I would attribute this message to leftover System Restore Points that somehow got removed during the reinstallation.
I have reinstalled sp1a and now the ">>can't find entry point" messages appear to have stopped and things like system restore are now working again. Thank you!

got back on the PC this morning and found that icons like MS OFFICE word etc and ACDSee etc are now all wrong again? Everytime I try to use the iphile UI it crashes and freezes the screen and I have to reset the machine and it appears to now be showing randomly selected icons even when I use defualt or the default set I created yesterday? e.g. If I now change MS WORD DOCS to its proper icon when I go and look at doc files that is not the icon that appears; it just shows a randomly selected icon every time I reboot the machine for say word .docs and it's the same story with other files too, like ACDSee images. It seems to have gone potty?
What.............s........
if that doesn't work...
other try, open mycomputer/explorer and then tools->folders options->file types. just select the file extension there...
for example doc, click advanced, click change icon, in my office 2003, the icons refers to C:\WINNT\Installer\{901104
if you are lazy to do that..................i'll

I think that all of your restore points are missing. Other than that I can't think of any other reason why you would be getting this "error".
I have reinstalled sp1a and now the ">>can't find entry point" messages appear to have stopped and things like system restore are now working again. Thank you!

Sorry, don't understand you?
for example doc, click advanced, click change icon, in my office 2003, the icons refers to C:\WINNT\Installer\{901104
I used this method and it took ages coz there seems to be dozens and dozens of those extensions! Only limited success though coz I don't even know most of those extensions anyway! I've changed the ones I do know to what I think they should be but I'm not 100% certain, some of them will not be the true default icons. I'm not even sure if all the extensions are associated with the correct programs/applications either (e.g. - .doc=MSWord, .txt=notepad, rtf=wordpad etc. etc.).
I've also cleared the cache from the registry again and run regvac. Then used repair icons in tweak UI again.
I've also deleted the default icon set from "iphile" and manually changed all the file ext. icons back to XP (I think?) from the theme set called "xtoon" that I downloaded from "themeXP" website.
But I've still got the:- Xtoon/blue
recycle bin
printers/faxes
control panel
my computer..........icons; despite all what I have done to change it. I guess these must be in a different part of the registry? These don't appear under 'file types'? Neither do things like my pictures, music, videos, favourites folders and their icons?
Is there a way to change these icons just in windows with regedit etc. without using a dedicated 3rd. party icon changer program?
Many thanks!

the size, less than < 600 kbytes
to use it, after installing, run..., and then click the icons tab. and then change the icons that you wish to change, click default, and click Apply. But I found it seems the program give me a wrong icons for my computer in my 98 system.
If the program can't give the correct icons for your my computer, just right click on desktop, and then click effects(sorry, this is for 98, i don't know if in xp, cause i'm working with 98 in office, xp is in my home, i'll check it after i get home). But everything works fine for me.... hope that can help you for your trouble...
still a bit of trouble now and again but better than it was before!
email from icon packager/stardock people just telling me that scrows iphile doesn't work on a per drive basis (A, B, C, D, etc etc) so I've sent them some screen shots (before and after) to show that it really does work on a per drive basis. I think its the only one that does? (HDD/CD/floppy).
many thanks!

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
