My computer and my husband's computer are having the exact same problem as was addressed on this site on 12/20/03 under the title "Computer Crashes". The problem is that the computer freezes and Ctrl+Alt+Del is unable to unlock it. A hard reboot is required. The event listed in the title is always the culprit. The Microsoft website does not offer any insight. The problem occurs about once a day and under a variety of circumstances (no apps open, many apps open, surfing, not-surfing, networked, standalone, etc.)
We are both using Home XP and have Sony PCG-FXAxx model laptops. We have other laptops/desktops on our home and business wireless networks running Home XP and W2K, but none of these have the problem. Basically, we have tried everything that was mentioned in the previous article, as well as a couple of other website suggestions. Namely, we have: 1. run Adaware daily and removed all spyware program 2. run Anti-virus software (McAfee on mine, PCillin on my husband's) 3. run McAfee Personall Firewall on mine 4. ran sfc /purgecache 5. ran sfc /scannow 6. ran chkdsk /R 7. ran disk defrag 8. keep up-to-date on Windows updates and Sony driver updates.
Before I back up our 40GB of data and work applications and reinstall the O/S, do you have any other suggestions.
Thanks!
Diane

The second link LeeTutor supplied led me to find some possible answers with my Sony models (both running AMD Athlon). It looks as though this was a particular issue with the Sony FXA series. The FXA models were released with Home XP and have a problem with SP1. Sony has released a BIOS update that supposedly fixes this problem. I had to uninstall my SP2 patches and then run the Sony BIOS update with only SP1 installed. So far, both of my computers have gone 36 hours without freezing, so I have my fingers crossed. Thanks LeeTutor!
I too have a Sony FXA series laptop with this problem.
What is the URL and identification info for the Sony BIOS update?
Thanks...

1. Go to:
http://ciscdb.sel.sony.com/cgi-bin/select-p-n.pl
2.Use the pulldowns to select Notebook and FXA Series.
3. Then select your specific model.
4. Click on "Drivers and Updates"
5. You should then find "BIOS" in listed under the Components Column.
6. Download the BIOS update executable and follow the installation instructions.
A couple of rather aggrevating notes regarding my experience...
#1: I was unable to uninstall the Hotfix that was causing the problem alluded to on the Sony support site, so when I ran the BIOS update utility, it reported an error stating "incorrect model". I contacted Sony and they said that the installation has to be run before the Hotfix is added... The Sony System Restore disks are useless when trying to repair XP, so I bought a Windows XP Upgrade CD and repaired the O/S without deleting any of my data files.
#2: I recently purchased a new laptop (Dell) and went to clean up my FXA53 to use as a backup at work. I decided to do a System Restore using the Sony supplied CDs and then perform the BIOS update. The Sony Restore got to 1% complete and then gave me catastrophic error message. In researching this problem, I found that Sony support claims 95% of these crashes are due to bad hard drives. However, I knew my hard drive was fine! I resolved this by going back to my Windows XP Upgrade CD, reformatting the hard drive and then reinstalling from my Upgrade CD. Once the laptop was back up and running, I was also able to finally install the BIOS update.

I've got the exact same problem on a VoodooPC Laptop (Mitac based). It's running an AMD Athlon64 3400+ (VIA chipset), 1024Mb and Win XP SP1. Everytime I hard boot, I get about 8 to 10 of those entries in Sys Event. I never get those when soft re-booting. Very weird. I never found a solution. Even flashing the BIOS to a newer version didn't solve the problem. Apart from that my machine is stable.
