MSCONFIG / REGEDIT / Misc. Software won't run correctly
Hello,
Problem (1):
I can start MSCONFIG / REGEDIT / Norton AV 2004 / Win XP (SP2) Q811493 FIX
but all these programs will shut down with in about 5 seconds. Basically, the window disappears. I can't run NAV to clean viruses.
Problem (2):
Microsoft say's, uninstall Win XP (SP2) Q811493 through the control panel, add/remove program, and click on "REMOVE" to delete from computer and then install the Win XP (SP2) Q811493 FIX.
My problem is two-fold with this one.
First, when I highlight the Win XP (SP2) Q811493, within the add/remove program, there is no "Remove" button available to delete it!
Secondly, When I do run the Win XP (SP2) Q811493 FIX it also runs for 5 seconds then window disappears!
Possible Solutions:
I am familiar with work arounds with REGEDIT such as rename REGEDIT.EXE to REGEDIT.COM or call up REGEDIT through a batch file. These suggestions work only for REGEDIT and MSCONFIG but don't resolve the overall problem.
I've also read quite a few suggestions but none seem to work.

Ed_Beyer,
Do you see a blue screen at boot [just before the reboot]? Never heard about this issue - Uninstalling 811493 causes reboot at startup.
Are you able to boot in Safe Mode or Command Prompt mode successfully. If so, you have two options. 1. check the event logs and 2. perform a system restore rollback to previous configuration.

Sramesh,
No blue screen at boot.
I turn on the computer and have a black background with white letters. Items like BIOS successfully installed, checking memory, ect. Then the Windows XP screen appears with the three blue lights that scroll across from left to right. Then the screen goes black, a few seconds go by, then back to the beginning as if I just turned my computer on. I don't know if I'm using the right terms when I say boot or start-up. All I do know is that I can't access anything on my computer!

Ed,
Before trying a repair installation [will preserve your data], see:

Idea is to replace new copy of kernel32.dll

Hello to All,
I finally got my computer fixed.
I saved all data then reformatted.
May be extreme... but it worked.
Thanks to all.

I used both of your suggestions ending with mixed results.
I changed the value for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\
In regards to the Win UPdate, I typed what you suggested to delete the CATROOT but it appears that it didn't work. Is it important to be in a specific directory? Like C:\WINDOWS? I can't remember, but I think I was in C:\ED\DOCUMENTAND SETTINGS. Win UPdate still doesn't run. (window disappears)
As for trying the Spunist.exe utility, I think I'm in big trouble now! I found the the Spunist.exe in the %Windir%\$NTUninstallQ8114
