"The semaphore timeout period has expired" error when mapping drives over a dialup connection.

Hi everyone,

I have a user who is using an XP pro PC with dialup.  They get onto the network fine.  They obtain
an IP address from DHCP, they can ping servers on the network, and they can access the Intranet.
However, when mapping to shares on a Windows 2000 server they get the error "The semaphore timeout period has expired" and it doesn't allow them to connect to the share.  Any ideas?

 Thanks for any input.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rdr
    \Parameters\UseWriteBehind
Give the above a value of 1

This is officially an NT4 fix

Thanks, but this registry edit doesn't exist under XP pro.

The RDR key is missing.   I'm not sure it would be a good idea to add a NT key to a XP pro box.
I concur!

Thanks for the articles.

Since the error only occurs when mapping to the shares on the Windows 2003 box
I don't think the error is the one related to DHCP. The user can get on and use Email and Intranet
and has no problems. It looks like if it was a DHCP problem it would show up right away.
The user has said as long as he doesn't try to map drives the error doesn't show up.
