I have installed an HP 1012 Laserjet on two computers: one running XP Home and one running XP Pro. I have followed the suggestions above but continue to get the setconfig.exe error. I have recently installed SP2. I wonder if that has any bearing on the problem? Any further suggestions to prevent this error message from appearing would be helpful. HP support suggested updating the Java Virtual Machine, which I did to no effect. Actually, once I click away the error message, the machine seems to run fine, but it's just a nuisance to have it appear all of the time and I'd like to make sure it's not causing any insidious problems. Thanks.
The issue in this case is a compatibility problem with the setconfig.exe file with the recent software builds on the HP computers.
As of now there is no permanent fix for this issue.
One of the workaround is:
Step I:
1. Right-click on Start button and select Explore option.
2. Explore to "c:\program files\Hewlett-Packard\hp laserjet 1010" folder
3. In the right-pane, highlight the setconfig.exe file, choose cut from the edit menu, double click into the “wu_temp” folder, and from the edit menu select paste.
Step 2:
1. Click Start, Run
2. Type REGEDIT and click OK
3. Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\softwa re\Microso ft\windows \currentve rsion\run
4. In the right-pane, select the item “HPLJ Config” then from edit select delete.
5. Close the registry editor and restart the system

I am having the same setconfig.exe problem. I have connected 10 computers to a hp1300n laser printer through a switch. For some reason I am only getting the error on one of the machines. I have tried most of the solutions above with the exception of the latest one because I don't have a "wu_temp" folder in "c:\program files\Hewlett-Packard\hp laserjet 1150_1300". I also reinstalled the printer. So far nothing seems to work. Any ideas why i'm only getting this on one machine.
I think that the "WU_temp" folder referred to is not found under "c:\program files\Hewlett-Packard\hp laserjet 1150_1300" but is simply "c:\WU-temp."
OOPS. It worked. Thank You.

1./ SECPOL.MSC does not work on xp home but the information on
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318030&Product=winxp
cured the network problem.
2./ Deleteing and reinstalling the print drivers with the printer hooked into the USB hub instead of direct to the computer cured the problem
FAST RESPONSE Excellant information.. Should have tried this 2 weeks ago
Thanx
