when installing XP Pro, drive fails to format 100%
Two days ago I built a new pc w/ Asus A7V8XMX SE-EAYZ  mb,
Athlon XP2.8 cpu and Maxtor 80Gb 7200 rpml 80g ide hdd.
I began installing XP Pro, partitioned and full NTFS formatted the drive but when the format 100% completes it ends(fails?) with the following err msg...

Error Message:
Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged. Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. Consult your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for more information. You will have to select a different partition for Windows XP. Press ENTER to continue

Can you as a test try making a smaller partition, say 10gb, and see if that formats all the way through?

Western digital drives are also funny.  If you have other drives on the chain.  Make sure you do not have them set to Cable Select.  Set the HD to Master, and any CDROM to Slave.

If possible, move CDROM drives to the secondary controller.

Thanks for the prompt comments. I have already used the powermax utility which
says the drive has no problems. I am currently letting the util low level the drive.
Yesterday I used Microscope 12 to test and Low level format  the drive- no problems. The drive is set to master on the pimery ide channel.

if it still won't work after the low level format, I'd try putting it in another computer and see if it does the same thing.  If it does, then it sounds like you may have a defective drive.

Also, have you double checked the jumpper settings on the drive?  If those are set incorrectly, that could be what's causing your problem.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
