Right click and delete opens the file

Hello:
Using Windows XP.
For example, I decide to delete the file "abc.xyz", which is on the desktop. I right click the file, then select "Delete" in the drop down menu. Instead of deleting the file, Windows tries to open the file. This happens in the "Windows Explorer" window also. The problem gets worse if many files are selected.
The corresponding dialogue boxes also pop up for each file selected:
If the file's extension is not recognized: "Select the program to open file"
And at the same time, the dialogue for deleting the file pops up:"Are you sure you want to delete this file?"
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem? Thanks in advance,
Jaime

Will try to do this as soon as Ihave time. Death in my wife's family, and deadline on program, no time now. Thanks for your patience.

I had to reinstall my OS. It was crashing and crashing continuously. Tried a repair installation but that didn't work either. Had to reformat and reinstall everything. Don't know what to do about the points, was never able to try. Any ideas?

Hello
I tried the ShellExView and saw how the problem would have been fixed with the procedure you described, so I am giving you the points anyway.
Thanks!
