As others have in the past, I am getting this message with a BSOD when I boot up in any mode other than safe mode or in safe mode with networking. It started after I tired to install a LaCie big disk using firewire400. The frustrating thing is that I still get the error after unplugging the disk, using USB instead, and even after physically removing the firewire PCI card. Booting in diagnostic mode also crashes.

I have tried system restore back to a couple of days before with no change.

I have run various disk and memory diagnostics and no problems found.

I have read about using dumpchk and other utilities to identify the driver but I don't find a memory.dmp file. the FSC command says it cannot initiate a scan of system protected files (perhaps because it is in safe mode?).  I suspect it is the 1394 driver but don't see a way to prove it.

Suggestions? I would hate to have to reinstall as I have a lot of programs loaded and a lot of work to do with them right now.

Thanks for the 'instant' response!!

I just tried the devmgr commands you provided but the window showed no devices even with the show hidden devices checked. I am pretty sure I typed it correctly (I could not cut & paste because I am accessing the web from my laptop - not my desktop with the problem - because I worry about the lack of antivirus software etc. in its present state.

I have not tried the repair install yet.

I looked at doing a repair install but I got an error message saying I could not do it because the computer had a newer version than what was on the CD. This must be because I had installed XP SP 2 from the web.

More info about the problem:

I have also tried doing a 'clean boot' using msconfig. Tried various combination including the selective startup with the exclusion of system.ini, win.ini, system services, startup items with even all the microsoft services excluded except the few that are listed as essential.

Makes me curious about the difference between that and a safe mode startup. What further things are excluded in a safe mode bootup that allows it to work and not a bootup with all those things excluded?
