XP attempts to install updates at shutdown

I was in class today and I shut down my notebook, when I turned it back on I had a dialog box saying that it is installing updates and not to shut off the computer, so I waited and waited and waited, eventually my battery died and when I turned the computer back on, it said in another box "SYSTEM ERROR: RESUME FAILED"

Low and behold when I needed to restart my computer again, the same thing happened with Windows trying to install some sort of update. I waited an hour and a half and it still said Installing update 1 of 2 and there was little to no hard drive activity (as indicated by LED), Eventulally i pulled the plug, yanked out the battery and the same "SYSTEM ERROR: RESUME FAILED"  message occured at reboot.

I can't find any documentation on the web regarding this so please help me.

sorry, my son wanted on to MSN a while...  didn't see your reply until now.  If you need any more help, I'm back on.
I restarted to get into safe mode and the problem was gone, so i did a windows update and all seems well now.
