windows\system32\drivers\ntfs.sys missing or corrupt

When booting up windows XP Pro, I am getting an error saying that  windows\system32\divers\ntfs.sys is either corrupt or missing.  I tried going into the recovery console and replacing the file, but i get a message saying that access is denied.  When I try to get a directory listing of the c: drive, I get a message saying "an error occurred during directory enumeration.  Help please.

I also tried running chkdsk, and after 50% of completion, it said that there were numerous un-recoverable errors.
I'd be very much leaning towards a failed disk.  What kind of drive is it?  Manufacturer/SATA/IDE/SCSI?
I agree with leew.  Almost all of the questions I see with the error "an error occurred during directory enumeration" end up being because of a failed hard drive.  Your hard disk may be on the verge of failing. I would suggest running a disk diagnostic utility. Most disk vendors have these for free.
