Print Spooler Service won't start - Windows XP
I can not print or add printers because the Print Spooler Service is not started.  The startup type is set to Automatic but it is not running.  When I try and start the service receive the following error:

Could not start the Print Spooler Service on Local Computer.  Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed t start.

The only dependency that I know of is Remote Procedure Call is is started.  I'm missing something but don't know what it is.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this:

Click Start->Run->Services.msc
Locate the Printer Spooler service double-click it to get to the properties.
From the recovery tab, change all three options to "Restart the Service".
Leave the bottom two options set to "1"  Ok out of this dialogue.

Now go back and try to restart the service...

Tried the recommendation by sirbounty.  Printer Spooler still will not start.

Tried the recommendation by sunray_2003.  Ran cleanspl.exe.  After running, still got the error that the Printer Spooler could not be started.

It's been a long week.  I thought I had looked at all of the entries in the Event log but missed the error for the Print Spooler telling me which service was not running.  Started the service and now I'm back in business.  Thanks.

One of my customers just experienced the same issue. It was a missing file from a Lexmark printer driver (lexbce.exe) missing from the system32 folder. The missing file kept the Lexmark service, a print spooler dependency,  from starting.  I simply replaced that file from another machine, started the Lexmark service then the print spooler service could start without any trouble.

Could not start Print spooler on local  computer. I tried all the above method but still gives the error code 1053.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
