Unable to log you on because the netlogon service is not running on this machine

Everything running fine yesterday, then booted up and got this error on the machine:

Unable to log you on because the netlogon service is not running on this machine

This is a workstation authenticating to an ad server.

Tried to logon the local machine instead of the domain, and tried to boot into safe mode but could not login either.  Using admin passwords and all.

Suggestions?

Maybe try this:

Log on to another machine.  Right-click My Computer and go to Manage.

Click on Action, Connect to another computer, and enter the name of the machine not running netlogon.

Go to services abd apllications, services.  Find Netlogon.  Right-click it and start the service.

Can't manage it

Should I be able to ping the problem machine from another before logging on?  I can't.

Also, I have another XP installation on the same machine that I can log on to fine.  Can I do anything from there?
Saw somewhere that replacing the win/system32/config/sam file might help but it did not.
replacing the sam file with what? the sam file contains most of the data for the profile. Can you not login to the admin (local) and get access that way? and make sure the service is turned on?
replaced the sam file with one from the repair file.  Can't logon to the local machine, I get a similar error about the netlogon service not started.

if this the following is similar to your error message;

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2114
Description: The Server service is not started.

then give the following page a read;

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=269375
Error message from trying to logo ontot the local machine:

"the system cannot log you on now because the domain LEONIE is not available"

LEONIE is the name of the local machine.
I can't even see the event viewer cause I can't log onto the machine.

If I can't log onto the machine, I can't edit the registry either.  At least, in no way that I know of.
the only way i can think of is using ERD Commander from winternals.
Its a great peice of kit!. just boot from the cd and its your sitting at a windows desktop with many tools at your hand.
www.winternals.com

Unsure as to if there are any other ways.
Nabberuk, i'm giving you the points since you were to most helpful.  Will try the winternals in the future, for now i excecuted a fresh install.  3h process but at least up and running again.
thanks! really do give ERD a try, its really is brilliant and brough back to life many machines that we have in the workshop.
Will do.
