hi tim gui
Before i had downloaded fixreg.com from grisoft.com site but could not run it at all. similarly exefix.reg does not even run, i get a message window saying "could not open the file exefix.reg, choose a program to run with.
since no .exe file will run , so could not check for any viruses or malware.
thanks.

Maybe an sfc /scannow would help.
Go to start<run< type in sfc/scannow and hit ok

This also does not work as it is an exe file.
This is basically a result of corrupt file associations for .exe, .com and .reg etc files. earlier i had a similar problem but it was only with .exe files and thus could fix it by running fixreg.com which resolved the problem but this time even .com file association is corrupt and thus nothing works.

i would boot to the recovery console of the winXP CD, and run a diskcheck first.

You would need to download the .reg file to someplace convenient where you can access it, such as your Desktop, then double click it to merge the contents into the Registry and reboot the computer.

Have you checked for malware?
