explorer.exe consuming high cpu and memory
Hey Experts,
I have Windows XP Home Edition running on my laptop and from one week or so, i see my system getting very slow most of the times.
when i look at the processes running, i see that explorer.exe is using 98% cpu and high memory and making the system slow (i guess cpu is more of culprit).
I cant open internet explorer, once i open that iexplorer.exe gets very high on cpu and the system acts too slow and not good, so i dont run internet explorer, rather i am using aol or mozilla browser.
Please suggest.

You should run Windows Update and get ALL of the latest patches. You can download the full thing here and burn to CD if your laptop won't work
It's a huge download, so don't try it over dial-up. Try Native Windows update if possible.

i went to the url that u send me and installed SP2, however when i run internet explorere, iexplore is > 95% on cpu and that is slowing the machine.

Thanks guys,
I used process explorer as suggested by cpc2004 and could find that the thread ssqrp.dll was causing high cpu on explorer.exe.
I killed it but could not delete it easily. I booted from an alternate windows 2000 cd into maintenance mode and deleted ssqrp.dll.

Max, do a google on the file ssqrp.dll. I have a suspicion that you have a virus infection. Are you getting any unexpected popups?
The filename you gave is showing up in some Hijack This logs around the net indicating Trojan.Vundo and variants.
I imagine you will begin to experience a slow down again very soon.
