Data Execution Prevention / Services.exe error
Hi

I get the following error when I start up (sometimes):

->  Data Execution Prevention
->
-> To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.
->  Name: Services and Controller App
->  Publisher: Microsoft

When I dont get the above error at start up, i get the following error after a couple of minutes.

->  services.exe Application error
->
->  The instruction at "0x0069bc76" refereced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be written.

follewed imediately by this message:

-> The system is shutting down (it has a countdown from 1 minute)
-> bla bla bla, this shut down was initiated by NT Authority\System
-> The system process \services.exe terminated unexpectadly, reference 1073741674

It is probably spyware still, i know, got it last night and used Stinger, Ad Aware and Hijack This to sort it out, and all those programs sceme it is running well now.

What do i do?

c:\windows\system32\services.exe is normal, but c:\windows\services.exe is not normal and is a trojan.

Im using AVG which gets updated daily! It says my PC is clean and I believe it! I think its very good.

>Are you by chance using, or have used Zone Alarm?
Nope

>c:\windows\system32\services.exe is normal, but c:\windows\services.exe is not normal and is a trojan.
There is no c:\windows\services.exe

>I'd suggest turning of DEP totally by modifying the Boot.ini file, and then changng the /noexecute policy level to alwaysoff.
I dont know if i really want to turn it off. Dont know too much about about it, but sure it helps protect my PC. Doesnt it?

good, you most likly don't have a virus or spyware as the cause.

Now onto more info, do your event logs give you any information above and beyond the error message you posted?

Do you have services that are set to automatic that are not started?

The services and controler app is usally associated with a firewall or port blocking software, are you running any firewall software, is it functioning correctly?

Thnaks

sorry, i lied, checked my virus check again and it found a couple of trojans, cleaned them up, restarted and it was fine. Played around a bit (didnt even go on the internet) problems started again, so redid the virus check and they were back, then i did it again and same results, so obviuosly the source is still their and AVG cant detect it. So I am going to fomat it, its due for a good format, havent done it in 6 months, and its is becoming a bit sluggish. I think my baby needs a fresh start.

Anyway thanks for the responce guys.

sorry mate, like i said, i think its definately a combination of virus and spyware. unfortunately i couldt find any freeware spyware removals to remove it, and my up to date AVG anti virus only detected the virus when it replicated, not the actual source, so it kept coming back. I think the spyware part wants you to install spysheriff http://www.spysheriff.com  but there was no way i was going to succumb to that, they put the spyware on my pc, and then direct me to their site to buy an anti spyware program, i really think that should be illegal

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
