windows installer pops up trying to install unknown photo gallery

for the last month or so, when i turn on my computer, right after the desktop is visible, the first thing i see is  a windows installer pop up preparing installation. I click cancel.  It comes back about 2 times. Then it shows a window titled "photo gallery". It will show info that says:
"the feature you are trying to use is on a cd-rom or other removeable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'photo gallery' disk and click ok.  use source 1, shows up in a field at the bottom.
I click cancel. Because the last time i clicked source 1, it opened a window showing me other files on the computer. i have no idea what i am looking for besides something that says "photo gallery". and i could not make sense of it at all. So,I click cancel.

That prompts another window tilted "photo gallery". It contains a yellow triangle with a "!" mark. Saying:
"error 1706. no valid source could be found for product photo gallery. the windows installer can not
continue. and there is an ok button.
i click ok and this gets rid of it for a while. but  periodically, this stuff will pop up again, while i am all ready on my pc. And i have to go through tha whole thing again.

how do i stop this from happening?

knowlege that might help: I have- windows xp home which has "my pictures"
                                               - picasa2
                                               - hp all-in-one printer, scanner, copier

sounds like you started an install and cancelled.
Go to start> run type in> msconfig > press enter
selective startup check your start up group and uncheck any installers active.
In system devices check any yellow question marks against a proram maybecalled other?
Finish installing the photoshop program??
look in control panel > administrative tools>event viewer>  applications

Running system restore to a backup before the problem started may be worth a shot. Just know that any other programs that you have installed since this restore point will also be lost.

It has been a long weekend for me. And I don't expect  this week to  get any shorter. Meaning- I will try Merete's, simpswr's, and cmushaun's suggestions in the same order that they came in.  Most likely the soonest that i will be able to devert my full attention to these matters won't be untilI Wensdays at best. until then I thank you all for your imput.and I will report back with the results.
