Internet Access repeatedly fails

My computer is connected to the internet by a Netgear 834g router. Several times a day, my computer loses the ability to connect to the internet. Initially I was suspicious of problems with my wireless network card. So now i'm directly connected to the router with a cable, but the same problem persists.

When I lose connectivity, the network connection still looks ok. If I try to repair it I get an error that it couldn't renew the IP address. But if I disable and then re-enable the adapter in the Control Panel, it connects immediately. When the problem occurs, I can't ping anywhere, but the network connection is still flashing as if there is traffic going throught it.

The router doesn't appear to have a problem. It always stays connected.

Anyone got any ideas?

Ian

This may sound odd.  But, try changing the surge suppressor/power strip that you have your router and/or modem plugged into.

When the problem occured, the router was in another room plugged directly into a power socket. Currently the router is plugged into the same power strip as my computer. The router is fine. It never disconnects. Whenever my problem occurs, the computer can't see the router either.

I should have mentioned that I have another computer which is connected to the same router. This computer works perfectly.
