2 80GB HD's, 2 win2k3 OS's on seperate HD'd. One boot.ini on C:\. I need one on D:\win2k3 to make a ghost backup of win2k3.

I forgot to disable my C:\ when I installed win2k3 on my second HD so it put both win2k3 boot loaders boot.ini mbr etc.... on C:\. If I disable c:\ then my win2k3 on D:\ will not boot without a boot.ini. Surprise surprise but if I copy the boot.ini into d:\ it still will not boot my OS on d:\ without C:\ being enabled. I just set up my server on D:\ and want to make a ghost copy on C:\ or vice versa as also a couple on CD or DVD.

This so when not if the server goes down I can simply boot from the other HD and ghost a good OS back to the drive that went down.

I put too much work into the win2k3 OS on d:\  and win2k3 on c:\ has had nothing done too it.

I need to make my d:\ drive bootable since it has the d:\windows directory in it.

I found this as one possible solution.

http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/111132.html

Copy the ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini into the d:\. I have not tried this yet but will in a few hours.

The above solution does not work.

What about copying the whole windows folder into c:\ as also the documents and settings and everything else but leave the boot.ini etc....

I can see where this would be a big problem if it didn;t work cause then I would hose my server OS.

Yes but after the repair install will my active directory be setup? I am thinking it won't be?

This is a primary partition and it is marked as active.

I have done the fix boot and fix mbr. You first have to have a boot.ini and mbr(master boot record) which this drive does not have since it is all on c:\.

Okay folks. I figured it out. Not sure which files did the trick but with hardrives with win2k3 on it I simply copied over ntdetect.com, boot.ini, config.sys, io.sys, msdos.sys, ntldr, pagefile.sys and virtpart.dat.

And then I set the partition to active like jhautani said.

Thanks guys. Not sure what was wrong before when I tried that but now I got it figured out.
