Windows Server 2003 SP1 update problem

It looks like you also have a bad SCSI driver (HP RAID controller maybe?)

Update all the drivers you have on the server - and check out that article.

Also, check to make sure the Cryptographic Service is started and any AV software you have is disabled during the upgrade.

Did you delete any of your KB Update files in \WINNT\$hf_mig$  ??  If not, it looks as though a few of them are corrupt...

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have tried them both but can't restart my server for the updates till around lunchtime and will let everyone know what happened then.  Hope you all didn't forget about my post and I'm sorry its been a week but I haven't been in all week.  Thanks.

Same thing still happens.
TechSoEasy's suggestion worked for all but the first two kb articles.  Just but running windows update through the site.  The first two though the site never found even after doing the command you specified.

Resetting the permissions didn't seem to do anything, and the file that the article said should be in the restore directory was a different named ini file.

I updated the drivers too for the tape drive afterwards and can no longer try the install since everyone is back from lunch now.

Well, this may take a bit longer to troubleshoot, but it can be worked out... it's not a totally uncommon problem.  Follow this KB:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 and make sure to just do one step at a time to see if that particular step works.

By the time it decompresses you have less than 10% free space - Windows is going to choke on this.

Free up some space for good measure so we can eliminate this.

Where did you get the SP files from?  Is this an original CD from MS?

If you downloaded it, you might want to download it again.  It almost appears that some source files are missing.  This could be the drive space issue, but let's also eliminate a bad distribution.

We should start with the basics here since I think we are overlooking something simple.

I tried all of the steps in the kb article techsoeasy recommended on 11/4 and the renaming of the catroot2 folder made the installation fail before copying anything with an internal error.  So I undid the renaming of the catroot2 and was back to failing on the updating the registry part of the sp1 installation.  I reinstalled the KB885835, however it still shows up in the svcpack.log as not able to be found.  Also I don't know that this is really the problem as it is more to do with the registry since that is where it fails in the installation and where it shows it finally quits in the svcpack.log file.  A microsoft tech person also had me run secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose again like mkdonohue's suggestion  above in the kb article but in the scesrv.log file it says:

Which means to me neither time it actually did anything running that command.  So if anyone has any more ideas to try I'm all for it. Y'know... I think I have an idea where the problem may lie... check out the ProductID registry key in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version to see if it matches the one in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version.  I just realized that you probably upgraded this server from Win2K (using \\WINNT as the root directory)... and there may have been some kind of corruption between those two keys during the SP install.

I checked both keys and the Product ID is identical.  This server was upgraded from WIN NT not 2K.

In case any one else runs into this problem I did find a solution though not from anything else mentioned here.  Using the AT command to start the setup program with /INTERACTIVE gave the necessary permissions needed to edit the registry.  Still Microsoft still doesn't know why the permissions to the registry were messed up in the first place but I found the AT command gives special privledges when running things.  So the exact command was "AT (a time) /INTERACTIVE setup.exe" where obviously (a time) was replaced with 10 seconds ahead and setup.exe was the actual filename of the SP1 setup.  Thanks for all that helped sorry but nothing but this really did anything so I do not think any points should be rewarded.

Glad you got it figured out... however mkdonohue actually spotted your problem early on... and I believe that his solution MAY have resolved it, but there's no way to look now to see why it didn't.
