The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

Widescreen Resolution not working in Ubuntu! (aurgh!)

I've been searching across forums for days now, and usually I receive no replies. If any of you can solve this problem, I will be eternally grateful. I'm going to try to be as descriptive as possible.

What I have:
  * Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy Eft" running the default GNOME
  * Gainax Geforce 5600 FX 256MB Video Card
  * Starlogic 20.1" Widescreen LCD, plugged in with a 10-foot DVI cable (yes there is a DVI input)
  * 1GB of RAM
  * Athlon XP 2800+ (it's old, and would probably be called a "Sempron" by the new standards)
  * nvidia-glx (Nvidia driver) installed from Synaptic Package Manager

What I'm trying to do:
  Run the monitor at 1680x1050 resolution, with a refresh rate specifically of 60Hz (and no higher). I haven't been able to get above 1280x1024 yet.

My xorg.conf (modified by the help of a Linux guru friend of mine):
  See attached file (below, in next post).

What I've tried to do:
  My friend and I added the two modelines that you'll see in the xorg.conf file, but neither one worked.
  It just reverted to either 1280x1024, or in some cases, 1024x768 (gross).
  I also tried running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", but when I get to the point where it allows me to select resolutions/refresh rates,
  the only option even close is "1680x1050@75Hz"; however, my monitor can only sustain 60Hz at that resolution.
