How do I get the AccessDenied/Error page in SharePoint to retain the navigation of the page the users was on?

When a user goes to a site in SharePoint where they do not have permissions, or the page does not exist, I need the LeftNav bar to retain the navigation for the site the user was on before. i.e. If I am currently browsing the Human Resources department, and I try to access a document that I don't have permission to see, I should still see the SiteNavigation for the Human Resources site, instead of my entire SharePoint site navigation. I am using team sites currently. I don't seem to be able to do this with the Global.asax file as I think SharePoint itself is using it for another purpose...
