what is the cheapest way to access the internet in the states?

Hi, I am going to  the states soon on a business trip/holiday and have a small notebook, which i'd like to be able to access the internet with plus access emails etc. I have asked about mobile broadband with my mobile provider orange but this seems too expensive at £8 per 100mbs.  are there cheap hotspots in the USA where I can log on to wireless spots for example? Can anyone recommend other ways of getting access to emails etc via HTC TIT11 for example for just emails?? any advice would be great!!
