Annual Games

The annual Lemming games have come around this year again. As usual the're held in Finnland (50 extra cheeses if you can tell me the connection) and the big new contest this year is river swimming.

The velocity of the current of a very wide river is proportional to the distance from the bank. The lemmings must start from a fixed point and swim downstream into and with the current. The winner is the lemming who in a given fixed time swims the furthest. Naturally all lemmings are equally good swimmers and all swim at the same constant speed.

How must the lemming proceed from the bank, in order to win the contest?

PS: The slowest lemming gets picked to death by a swan.
