Spontaneous Smoke Generation

This may be far afield of the usual subjects here, but perhaps there are some chemists or physicists who would like to weigh in on it. I am seeking a substance that will be stable up to around 288ºC but will generate a large volume of (reasonably) non-toxic smoke above that temperature. Research into this so far suggests that most smoke generation systems are driven or at least initiated electronically. The proposed end product in this case is intended to be passive, and ideally about the size of a standard deck of playing cards. It could be a binary device that combines the separate components by melting away an alloy plug formulated for selected temperature. For any contributions, please think in terms of a real application, as this is an actual project vice an element of a storybook.
