What exactly is the significance of the formula H2O?

Hi Everyone;

            Of course, from General Chemistry 101, I know that H20 is the compound representing water.  However, I am wondering what the actual significance of this formula.  Does it mean two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen?

            Any shared thoughts to this question will be appreciated.

           Thank you.

It is true that The valency of Hydrogen is 1 and the valency of oxygen is 2
but the formula H2O does not in itself mean that the valency of Hydrogen is 1 and the valency of oxygen is 2

Hi Everyone;

          After reviewing all of the information, I would like to ask a followup question relating to this post.  Basically, how does a molecule compare to an atom?  If I understand it correctly, a molecule is larger than an atom, but, I am not sure how much more they differ.

           Thank you

Not necessarily.
A molecule of H2 may be smaller than an atom of Cs
"In chemistry, a molecule is defined as a sufficiently stable electrically neutral group of at least two atoms"

pretty much sums it up. A molecule is made up from atoms, as my last post said.

Hi Everyone;

           Thanks so much for the prompt and well thought out replies to this question.  I certainly learned much from the personal insights shared within this thread.  After reviewing the information at hand, the best way to sum it up is to look at molecules being made up of parts, namely, atoms much like a biological cell is made up of smaller units such as a nucleus, cytoplasm, and so forth.  Everything mentioned about molecules and atoms certainly made sense.  And, everybody did a great job tying all of this together with regards to explaining the significance of the forumula H2O.

             Thanks once again for a job very well done!!!!
