Phase/group velocity and dispersion

Asked by InteractiveMind in Math & Science Questions

What is the significance of the phase and group velocities, with regards to dispersion in a medium?

I suppose that one relation, is that:  if v=v_g, then it is a non-dispersive medium.
(Where v is the phase velocity, v_g the group velocity).

Also: if v is a function of k (the wave number), then it is a dispersive medium (right?).
Is this also true for v_g?

Any other relevant facts?
