How do you calculate the volume of an irregular (distorted) triangular prism? And what is such a shape called?

Hello,
Given a geometric primative which is topologically identical to a triangular prism but with an inconsistent cross-section and which may be distorted in any possible way - how do you calculate its volume? Do you have to split it into manageable chunks to solve it? And what is the general name for such a shape? is it still a prism if it doesn't have a consistent cross section?

Thanks,

Philip
