Question

Probs with Yahoo mail & hotmail

Asked by: richfxt

I am no longer able to properly access long held yahoo & hotmail accounts.  I can access the main inbox of my account on both sites, however, when I try to read or delete any of the messages, I get one of those 'site cannot be accessed messages'.

I have tried everything I can think of to remedy these, such as clearing my cookies file, deleting temp files, refreshing, opening in the window, and even trying alternate browsers, like netscape and opera. (I am using IE6).

I am running on XP home, and have been for 3 months, but the sites have worked fine until now.

any ideas folks?

Thanks

Hi Rich,

well, that must be annoying...
When you say that you've tried everything and you get the same error message each time, what does the message say _exactly_? Have you tried to access your accounts from a different computer?

One thing you might be able to try is this: login to hotmail / yahoo and look (under options or preferences, or something) for "POP/SMTP" settings. There you should find a guide on how to access your email with a normal
mail client like Mozilla Mail or Outlook.

Good luck!

Teewurstmann.

Yep I have even tried with another comp!

The message via IE6 is a typical 'site cannot be accessed' type message, suggesting that you detect network settings, or that maybe the site is down.  When I try with netscape or opera, I just get a blank white screen.

Maybe its poss that there is a screwup their end, but it seems a bit of a coincidence that both mail isites are experiencing probs.

btw. yahoo now charge to access mail from outlook, so I wont try that, plus, I cannot access any part of my account in order to implement changes.

Are you using any blocking/filter softwares? Any firewalls? Also try using your accounts from another PC. Hotmail disables accounts which have not been accessed for a month (I think).

You mean you get the same error on a different machine too ???

by: teewurstmannPosted on 2003-07-08 at 06:07:25ID: 8876698

Have you tried it with a different operating system, too?
Is your windows up-to-date, with all the patches, that it needs?

My Win2000 PC also doesn't want to display some pages sometimes, so maybe a different OS
or some patches will do the trick.

And: Email the hotmail and yahoo support team. They might be able to help, too!

Have you tired clearing the cache & your cookies - that might help.  Especially if you have more than one yahoo / hotmail account.  It does seems strange though it is happening on both of them - two different companies, etc.  I know a few weeks ago when I was using Yahoo for a few things - it was giving me some immense problems.  What about Outlook Express to check Hotmail?

Yep I get the same errrs on a different computer, alotho I havnt tried with a diff ops system.  One of the comps has a firewall, the other doesnt, so I can rule that out as a pos problem.   Is it poss that the accounts have a virus?   I wouldnt know how to check that as I cannot access them fully.  I have e mailed the support temas of both so I will see what they have 2 say.

Ok

This is the same for both Yahoo & Hotmail.

I log in using my UN and PW.

I see the 'Inbox' with all the headers of the e mail messages awaiting.

However, if I click on any of the e mails  to read them,  I get the 'The page cannot be displayed' screen.

Sometimes, I can get around this by clicking on 'open in the window' but mostly not.

So about as far as I can get is seeing all my e mail headers (42 unopened so far), but I cannot read, delete or move them.

The same applies for both pcs. and three different browers.

I cannot get into yahoo or hotmail further to edit my account settings, so, short of giving up on web based mail I dont know what else to try.

Are all the PCs you've tried this from on the same "internal network"?  Are you using XPs built in firewall?  Popupblocker installed?

Brett

by: richfxtPosted on 2003-07-08 at 12:22:29ID: 8879719

No they are seperate, although i use the same cable ,modem.  I dont have a popupblocker, and I didnt even know xp had an internal firewall !

by: arbertPosted on 2003-07-08 at 12:27:02ID: 8879754

How can they be on a seperate network if they use the same cable modem?????

by: richfxtPosted on 2003-07-09 at 00:31:46ID: 8883188

well you just unplug it from one computoer and plug it into the other!

by: teewurstmannPosted on 2003-07-09 at 02:41:43ID: 8883773

Do all the other websites work fine?
Or do you also have problems with other websites?

Have you tried it from a friend's computer, in a different house, with a different internet connection?

Hi,

Im having exactly the same problem!!

I sign into yahoo as normal and i can see "you have # unread messages" but when i click to view the inbox it says "page cannot be displayed" even when i goto compose or any other options the same thing happens.

I can access hotmail and other secure sites just not yahoo?

I have tried deleting all cookies, checking encryption, trying netscape (screen goes white and just hangs) but still no luck!?

It was working fine for ages and just stopped all of a sudden??

I have another comp on a network and that has the same problem but i can access my email from my mates and work computers.

Im running xp and im connected to the internet through link sys router with built in firewall. Im pretty sure its not the router as its been working fine for the last 2 months since the router was installed.

It really is driving me mad!!

Thanks,

Mike

SOLUTION:

Its no problem from your computer, its a problem from microsoft. currently a lot of microsofts DNS servers are down, so people cant connect to them For most people this is techno-talk, so i explain. If you connect to a site, u dont conect to the server immediatly, but so several sub-adresses. this is done because it would overload a DNS if half the world connected trough the sameone. Now microsofts DNS servers are down, people in various regios cant connect to them. Since people from west amerika connect to anpther DNS, its possible they cant get trough, while someone nearer to another DNS, can get on.

Currently microsoft is working on the problem. but it can take some time to finisch
